WANTED: bamboo, reusuable gardening materials

We're looking for reusable gardening materials for our Nature Center at Camp Berachah in Auburn, WA where we have a petting farm, edible gardens, & activities for school age children attending our before/after school & summer camp programs. Since the ice storm damaged our cyclone fencing for the petting farm, so we're using the opportunity to rebuild & expand our program.

clear shoebox size or larger (ok if no lid)

egg cartons

garbage cans plastic or metal (holes okay)

lidded totes for storage

plastic laundry basket

sturdy willow, plastic or coated wire baskets

wood or plastic whiskey barrel, ok if holes

I can bring several egg cartons to the GE.
You might want to post this on the 'Garden Exchange' post, too. On the 'Exchanges and Trading' page where the 'Pacific Northwest' link is at the bottom of the left column, the 'Garden Exchange' link is at the top of the right column. That's the place where you can post all non-plant garden exchanges, and from the looks of it, it has some current traffic (unlike some pages where the last post was in 2009). Not sure if there are any local people on it, though.

I'm not sure how the humidity is in your area but that might be a factor in growing certain bamboos. The bamboos will probably need more water than in higher humid areas. I personally would try one of the Bambusas, of which Punting Pole belongs, however, my Punting Pole Bamboo does not have really thick walls but then it needs a warmer climate than I have here also which could be a factor. Oldhamii might be one to look into if you want really thick culms and the culm walls are relatively thick too. The thickest culmed Bambusa I have grown is Bambusa pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus' but was sold to me as Bambusa eutuldoides 'Viridivittata' which is smaller but also thick culmed. B perv. 'Viridistriatus' is so thick you can use them as bats. Very thick walled. It is also a colourful bamboo but also a rare one so it may be a bit more expensive. One thing to remember about bamboo, and I guess any plant for that matter, the plants can grow very differently in different climates and soils. I have taken divisions from my original Textilis bamboo and they all seem to grow a bit different, even when planted only yards apart. Amount of sun, amount of water, type of soil, fertilizer, and surrounding plants all contribute to how your bamboo will grow. Kt

Davissue, very nice gate and very authentic in appearance. This is the type of gate that would lead to a special inner garden path while the person in the photo might be facing the "familiar" entrance to a residence. Kritter64, call Hida Tool and talk to Suzuki-san. She can tell you if she has a source for what you are looking for. Hida is a great resource. Please post your results for the rest of us. Edzard, speaking of polished posts, I have come by a 6" x 10' post of Metasequioia. Have you are anyone else used this wood?

If the client doesn't want to switch out the bamboo for another species, you are kind of stuck. There is nothing you can do to make that bamboo put up shorter culms. However, all bamboo do top out at different heights, so it won't keep getting bigger and bigger indefinitely...just until it reaches the customary height for that species, whatever that is. I grow lots of varieties of bamboo, but I also live in a part of the country that gets very little snow, so I don't have the regular snow-loading problems you are facing, but I occasionally tie up new culms when they lean out too far. Even if you switch to another species of bamboo that does not get as high as what you are dealing with, there are none that I can think of that have short, thick culms that won't flop over with snow. The only suggestion I can make is to continue topping (which I consider bad aesthetically), and/or to support the clumps by tying them to the wall or fence. This can be fairly unnoticeable if you use the right material. You might even consider using a really heavy duty monofilament fishing line, which would be nearly invisible, yet help prevent flopping over. Monofilament line

Corrine - will you be at the Olympia trade? I have quite a bit of older seed that I'd love to donate. I have good success with getting older stuff to sprout but it can be hit and miss. Maybe a good lesson on testing seed viability? Anyway..let me know and I'll bring some tomorrow
