I like to use other plant material besides daylilies for edging. Here is a partial sun area using heuchera for foliage color:

In the early spring I use pansies for edging/ border color and in the summer they are replaced with annuals. I can't find a summer picture of this same area - have used low growing annuals such as ageratum, etc. But you might consider any low growing annuals you like to give season long color.
Here's a spring view w/ pansies of the back border ( there are a few heuchera and scabiosa ( perennials) in the edging area also since they are low growing. This was taken last May 3rd, after bulbs but about 6 weeks before daylily peak bloom.

Thanks for the ideas, I have about thirty heucheras now and do plan to more. I'm moving some forward and putting taller plants behind them. I'm mixing the edges. I don't want anything formal or all the same all the way around.

Floota - I love the heuchera border! Does that area get morning sun only? You have a great collection of heucheras.

That is really nice. Gives your borders a lot of color even when the daylilies aren't in bloom. Are there heuchera's that work in full sun borders too?

The heuchera border is so pretty. I especially like the reddish ones. How about lamb's ears as another idea. I have a mixed border of roses and daylilies, also some shasta daisies and use the lamb's ears on the edge.

Thanks, Debi. The heuchera border is on the Northwest corner of the house and gets about half sun.In the long border I have several clumps of Heuchera 'Pewter Veil' which have been there for years and done well in full sun.
Several other spots in the garden I have heuchera in nearly full sun and they've all been there for at least two years. However, I'm not sure they would tolerate full zone 7 or 8 sun and thrive! Scabiosa ( pincushion flower) is another perennial that is low growing and blooms almost all summer. But the front borders are areas where I do like to insert annuals for all season color.

I have many Heucheras in full sun here in the Pacific Northwest but our full sun means cloudy three quarters of the year.....

Thank you buyorsell. I'm in the same general area as you. I think I'll move some of my Heucheras. I've just always kept them in the shade because I guess I thought of them as shade plants. I'd love to use them in more places in the garden though.

Floota! Your beds are gorgeous!!! I love how neatly they are arranged. Can you tell me how you achieve the edging? I love that look. I find it a lot to maintain, though, using a flat shovel.

Thanks - it is high maintenance and I do use the flat edged shovel. This time of year it is almost a losing battle with the robins. I get it looking neat one day and the next, they've pulled the mulch out again. Some of the beds out back are built in with landscape blocks, so those don't have to be maintained as much!
But before visitors come, I'll usually re-edge to keep it neat. It isn't that bad once you have the nice edge there.

floota: I'm outraged! Just outraged that your bed can look so beautiful. Where are the dandelions, crabgrass and thistles? hmmmm. Maybe "envious" is the more appropriate word. :P GREAT looking beds.

buyorsell888: I've been really pleased with some minis/smaller dls, in particular, Persian Pixie, Baby Blues, Baby Blue Eyes, Raspberry Cupcake, Tuxedo Whiskers and Little Miracle. Hanson's "Jewel of the Oasis" produces nice big blooms on a petite plant and the colour is mesmerizing. Stamile's "Butterfly" series are also quite nice and don't grow too large (at least for me).

How many hours of sun are your coral bells getting? I ask because i would love to plant Georgia Peach next to my red rose bush but this area gets a lot of sun. You have yours planted by DL's so they must get a generous amount of sun
