Procumbens juniper-cone formation
Comments (8)From R P Adams (2004), Junipers of the World: Juniperus procumbens (Sieb. ex Endl.) Miquel .... Dioecious. Shrubs procumbent. Trunk bark brown, exfoliating in plates .... Seed cones glaucous, greenish-tan when immature, glaucous, black when mature, subglobose, 8-9 mm in diam. Seeds (1-) 2-3 per cone, ca. 4 mm, ridged. .... Uses widely cultivated, cv. 'Nana' is very common. Distribution: south coast Japan, south and west coasts of Korea. Status: not threatened. - - - - - - - - - - - - Presumably only cv. 'Nana' is widespread in cultivation; if it is J. squamata misidentified, maybe the true species is not in cultivation at all. But it shouldn't be hard to find in Japan or Korea. Comments (1)You are one of the lucky ones (or instinctively sensitive ones) because for whatever reason, people do have bad luck with them, either by overdoing the care, underdoing it, or just plain ignorance and bad luck....See MoreNot quite as small as Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Pygmy'
Comments (5)I am not so sure what you are looking for is out there. You want something that is larger then 'Blue Pygmy' but slow enough that it doesn't in 10 years jump to 4-5 ft. in spread? You can, for years, keep spreading/ mounding junipers in check with selective pruning. The key word here is selective. Know what you want to achieve with this cultivar then make your cuts accordingly. It's a common practice that I use for my small islands. Also applies to other Genus/species cultivars. I have kept some in check for years that if left to free range would have taken over my whole island and in the yard making an impossible situation to deal with.
