Rubythorne, where in MO are you? In SE MO (bootheel, my youthful home area), there is a wild grape (Vitis rotundifolia), commonly called Muscadine and/or Scuppernong grape, that are very sweet and are used extensively in the SE US for jam, jelly and home wine making. They are a fairly tender species and probably wouldn't survive if winter temperatures fall below 0F for a length of time. Many wild grapes are dioecious, requiring male & female vines, usually within 25 ft. of each other. Some selections and hybrids have been bred that are monoecious (hermaphroditic), having male & female flowers on the same plant. These are one's that are usually available from nurseries. Hi all. New in this forum. I've been following this discussion with much interest as it seems to me that wild grape has exploded here in N.E. Wisconsin. To be sure, it's been present forever, but in recent years, I'm just seeing more and more of this stuff, and it's very disturbing as it seems to preferentially be climbing up into my favorite trees...........conifers. It is not at all unusual to see vast amounts of otherwise nice spruce, cedar, and pine utterly grown over with this vine. And it does eventually do the trees in, simply by shading them out. So I ask, has anybody else noticed what seems like an increase in the presence of wild grape in your area woodlands....especially along roadsides? +oM

Mick, that may be the variety my parents looked for each year. They got harder and harder to locate, since the area became more and more residential. I live in SW Missouri -- could they also be called Fox Grapes? If so, they certainly were in our area and made wonderful jelly. You might google this variety, also contact Missouri Conservation Dept. and even Newton County Extension office for more information. Good luck - Sunny
