Newly planted Green Giant Arborvitae starting to turn brown
Comments (2)did it come from a greenhouse.. and you planted it outside.. w/o hardening it off??? i would not have amended the soil ... especially with pure peat ... one stops drainage.. and the other retains extra moisture ... i would have planted it according to the link regarding clay soils .. i would not have added magical elixirs to the water ... and a thought for the future... just because you buy it.. it doesnt necessarily mean its the proper planting time... had you held them in the garage for a week or two ... you might have been better off .. its in transplant shock.. at this point.. on this pic.. it should survive ... but only time will tell .. let us know.. in the other forum ... if the browning continues ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreWeeping "Nootka" Alaskan Cypress. turning brown
Comments (10)Thanks Ken, im in Long Island, NYâ¦zone 7.I bought 4 of these just over 8 weeks ago(mid April). They were planted a few days later by a professional landscaper.Temperayures were in the 60s.Big ball and burlapâ¦they opened the burlap, removed the ropes.Soil is clayâ¦.so drainage is an issue.I put drips on these immediately, so they wouldnt stress(ha).Ive fertiized them with a bit of 18-24-12.The weather has been pretty wet for a while. I agree about the transplant shock, but also suspect something a little more insidious!(fungus)â¦They were beautiful when i bought themâ¦Incidentally, i bought these trees at a nursery had the great deals(6 twelve foot River Birchâ¦5 diedâ¦.(6 skyrocket juniperâ¦.4 died) the only stuff that looks good is from Bizon on the west coast, and i know they root prune.I believe these "nootkas" were from Bizon..but not positive....See MoreNewly planted Aborvitae turning brown
Comments (5)Thuja is very forgiving of over-watering, so my first inclination would be to look to other reasons. One possibility is fungal issues if you're watering the foliage every night. If you are watering the soil only, disregard the comment, as this tree is usually pretty resistant to fungal attack. I wonder about how the trees were situated in regard to sun exposure before being planted? If the trees were sitting in one place for a long time (so one side was largely shaded from sun), or if they were situated so they were close together, shading each others foliage, you could be seeing simple sunburn. The parts that were shaded could easily "burn" when suddenly planted in full sun. If the trees have been fertilized already, it's possible they are exhibiting symptoms of fertilizer burn. Don't know if any of this fits. Trees only need soil to be slightly moist. Trees don't drink water like we sip through a straw. They absorb water by osmosis, molecule by molecule from the microscopic coating of water on the surface of soil particulates. Comments (3)I'm not at all sure why central Texas would necessarily encourage the "thriving" of these plants at this time of year compared to similar hardiness zones in the northern hemisphere. Both should be shutting down in accordance to shorter day length and cooling temperatures just as they would anywhere else. The night time temperatures in your area at this time would certainly support that winding down of the growing season and both annual and perennial plants are winding down their growing season as well. btw, annuals do not have to set flower and bloom before dying off. Cold - especially temps close to freezing - will kill them off regardless of ability to bloom and set seed....See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
