I have been gardening for three years already. Recently, I have started to explore the possibility of edible ornamental plants, which are expected to occupy a more dominant feature in my garden. A WWW search has mostly revealed many websites which mention native foods without details on a satisfactory level. (sort-of by-the-way footnotes). I guess many would like to find such websites, so I am contributing one name to the list, hoping it will grow bigger.

One must remember, bush tucker was what was eaten because there was nothing else to eat!
I am fond of the Plants for a Future site; those guys actually eat the stuff and rate it. Edible does not mean tasty, unfortunatly.
I have some Periskia cacti. Is that a cacti whose fruit is eaten in Israel? I know you all eat a lot of Opuntia; I got some thornless Opuntia and I find it's not ever going to develop into nice flat round shapes because my BullTerriers are eating it (so, all the pads have suspicious nips.)

One thing we did, after putting in our favourites, was to look to our aboriginal peoples and native plants. Many of the elders like to share their knowledge: personal one-on-one; local history/lore = check your local independent bookstore; university classes/radio talk; festivals and gatherings. The local native plant society can often point you to great nursery stock/seed sources/seed banks. My kids are also interested in the first people's culture, technology and arts ( esp. basketry). We are also birdwatchers. I'm interested in herbal medicines. It made sense to include native edibles into our 'domesticated' landscape since they thrive in this area and serve numerous purposes not only for us but for the wildlife. Unfortunately, we are becoming an island in a suburbian wasteland ('unfortunate' in that there is a flurry of construction which equals shrinking habitat for wildlife and native plants). Using a 'forest' approach we have been able to 'layer' the landscaping with many plants in a small area. The native plants do well and are pest free.
We are blessed with living in an area that has some delicious natives ... perhaps some are an acquired taste LOL but we mix and match and experiment.

Very nice patch of jewelweed!! Glad to hear your home didn't flood. We have 20 acres also, but it's all wooded. About 3/4 is "hills & hollers" (as we say in the South), the rest is a creek bottom. Jewelweed grows in the sunny spots along the creek, and the hummers do love it! Do you have any Lobelia cardinalis growing in your floodplain? It may just be the photo, but your jewelweed looks more yellow than mine. Does yours look like this up close?...

Glenn, My emphisis on third world coruption is valid in the sense that third world leaders are usually not elected democratically and are therefore are not beholden to their subjects. They often don't care much for their own people and take money offered by first world groups in exchange for whatever intrests those groups may have. Certainly you may say that Democratic countries could elect leaders that after reaching office don't listen to their constituents and then do whatever they please but I would say the difference in corruption via money is profound. To your point though I would agree that it is first world businesses pressuring folks to buy the seed. If it is dangerous and they realize this then this is corruption. Further if congressmen take money from businesses to push a dangerous product then this is also coruption. Greg

Don't know if you're still reading this, Kyle (cookebook) but I went to the Airline farmer's market on Saturday. We've been having such gorgeous weather and I thought it was the perfect day to walk around that outdoor market. Well, I have to say, there WERE a lot of sellers and it was fun to look around. However, in the end, I bought very little. Mainly because the vast majority of the produce had no visible price signs! I don't like to ask because I always get the feeling that they'll quote me a price based on what they think I'll pay. And the places that did have prices, well mostly they weren't better than grocery stores. I did get some roma tomates for 50c a pound, great price. And a HUGE seedless watermelon for $4, in OCTOBER yet! I had just bought a seedless watermelon for $4 at the regular grocery store last week and it was pretty small. But I just LOVE watermelon and keep buying as long as I can. When I got home and put the two watermelons next to each other, I about fainted. The one from the farmers market was easily twice as big as the one from the grocery store. I also bought some jarred salsas for $2.29 each. I hope they are good. That size jar in the grocery stores sells for $5 & up. Also got a basket full of zucchinis & a basket full of limes for $1 each - you know, like on the clearance table. All in all, a good haul, but I don't think I'll go there too often mainly because it was a bit of a drive. I'm not in that area of town often but I would probably stop by if I ever am!

I have not encountered the name Periskia, Possibly you meant Pereskia. What we do eat here and in the neighbouring countries is the prickly-pear (Opuntia Ficus-Indica). Some would even cook the pads, but I'm unfamiliar with the process. I have even found some articles, about edible cacti. caution should be exercised, so buy only labled cacti, because there are many look-alikes. I had quite a tough time identifying mine!
