Planting too deep = less/no bloom?

Seems to me I read somewhere on this forum a discussion on how deep to plant daylilies and the point was made that if they are planted too deep [more than an 1" to 1 1/2" above the root joint] it would inhibit the ability of the plant to bloom.

Does anyone remember the discussion or do you have any knowledge or experience with this situation??

It will inhibit its ability bloom, maybe even inhibit its ability to live. Plant your daylilies a little high at first, they will settle some afterward. I plant so that soil just covers the crown, then add a layer of mulch over that.

If planted too deep, they will adjust their height in relation to the soil level. It may cost you a bloom season while they adjust. If extremely too deep, they may also die on you, especially the less vigorous ones.

Height also relates to climate. Those who live further North must plant a little deeper than those who live in the deep South. You should also be careful when applying mulch/ and or compost each year. Don't put it up around the crowns. In fact, consciously pull it away from the crowns. I had a few that - even though I thought I'd been careful when applying mulch and compost, had become too deeply planted over the years. They had to be lifted and replanted after adding some soil to those areas. I made the mistake of dividing a huge clump of a favorite daylily a few years ago- replanted the clump into the same hole but only added a little soil. The clump was too deep and died the next summer. Have now replaced it and made sure to replant this time AFTER adding soil and compost to get the plant up high enough! It is now coming up fine this spring and I can't wait to see it, having missed its bloom season in 2008.

I planted my first order from Palatine and had the roots rot in deep clay while the upper areas survived. Part of this was multiflora in alkaline conditions. Now I put the long roots in a 15 gallon can and get no rot at all. The potting mix is very light and full of air. If I was going to plant long roots in the ground, I would place them on a slant or spread them out if I could do it without breaking them. I have put roses deeper down to encourage own rooting on the stems and if I dig them out again a year later to make several plants, I find that the roots from lowest areas have rotted away in the bottom of the hole.

It is often a very poorly done too deep planting job that knocks a good hosta plant back, and can eventually stunt or even kill it. In potted hosta it is terrible planting procedure but common with current high speed potting machines and unskilled help. If your hosta plant has any dirt up over emerging eyes or there is dirt all the way up on the growth stem, it is simply planted too deep. How to tell? Lift the plant out of the ground or pot (after loosening the soil and roots) and you will see a visual point in the stem which is just above the first crown or crowns. That should be at ground surface level. Why I don't like mulch - just visited a garden that I installed for some one 10 years ago - this Spring a landscape service "with Knowledge about hosta " came in and spread 2-3 inches mulch directly on the very large mature plants. They are now "planted too deep" Except for the 35+ inches of rain we have had here, those plants would be suffering more. With the rains they have grown vertically but next year will be a problem. I may walk away from the garden, it will be too much work to fix. Many slow growing hosta are planted too deep. I have many plants that have their roots in the Spring jumping out of the ground but they can be covered with just a small amount of soil and do fine. I often recommend lifting a stunted plant that is slow growing and give it some break-up energy ( Ken referred to it as a thrashing it on the sidewalk, but I used whatever rigid structure is around, to loosen the root ball). Then replant it knowing where the crown is, so it won't be too deep. My big bed of the heavy blooming 'Aphrodite' does not like to be buried deep - won't bloom if it is, same as plantaginea. Bruce

i don't think it's because they're too deep. it would seem to me that if they were too deep they wouldn't send up flower stalks at all, only leaves. the buds turning brown and dying could be a disease but i'm not sure what. i've never had that problem, but some plants that my ex had did the same thing, only there were other buds that opened so we didn't care. i divided the plant figuring that that would take care of itself. i left the biggest ones there and took the smaller ones and so far they haven't bloomed yet(this is going to be their second summer)though i'm hoping they will this year. i would add a bit of fertilizer (preferably one that has a lower nitrogen content, the middle number) or amend the soil with some bone meal right around the plant. if you think that they're getting too big maybe dig and cut at the end of this year and see if that changes anything. good luck!

Thanks floota and xokientx, the points you make have been my experience. I had several daylilies that did not bloom last year, even tho they were large enough fans to do so. I was looking for a reason and wondered if that could have been part of the problem...although i know there could be many reasons.

If there are simple, obvious things like that causing problems, I think it's something we should be aware of and keep an eye on.
