Very pleased with my order from Klehm's

I've been patiently awaiting my delivery from Klehm's and today was the day! I for one, appreciate knowing how well a company packages and ships so I will include an example of the boxing. I bought four trees, two clematis and an oriental poppy. All very nice, no complaints at all. I planted all of the trees this evening and none were really rootbound. I would definitely order from them again.

Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Green Arrow' came in this box (liner of the box on the right.)

Picea pungens 'Blue Falls', Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Green Arrow', Fagus sylvatica 'Aurea Pendula' and Picea pungens 'Golden Feather'.

This Fagus sylvatica 'Aurea Pendula' is the reason I even made the order. I know it's a slow grower by I am pleased with this little guy and had the perfect place for it. I would love to see other's so feel free to post them!

Nice choices Robyn. I almost placed an order for the same reason. Love that Fagus sylvatica 'Aurea Pendula' and you rarely see it. I tryed a tiny one many years ago and it didn't make it but that's a nice sized plant and it's great that you have a good spot for it. I'm sure you'll be the only one on the block with that one :) Thanks for sharing the pics.

Aggie, Very nice pictures! I'm also glad to hear that things are going well for you. I had planned on trying for Gulf Frits this year, but the Maypop seeds that I bought off of ebay didn't come up. I got so busy with the other plants that I have that I decided to forget that for this year. There's always next year. I want to wait a few years and try to get them on my own because I like surprises. :) I do want to see them here sometime during my lifetime so at some point I might order a couple kinds of butterfly eggs. I had a female BST lay an egg here one day, but something got it before I could get to it. I didn't see her lay any others. That was probably a week ago and I haven't seen her since. So you and I are about in the same boat with the BST's. I don't blame you for ordering the False Nettles and not wanting the Stinging Nettles. I don't want any of those here either. I have plants that resemble pictures of False Nettle that I've seen on the internet. I think I will take a picture of them sometime and post it here for a positive ID if someone here would be able to tell me if that's actually what they are. It's a plant that I have always considered a week and would pull them out whenever I saw them here. ARG! Cathy

Thanks lilyfinch and gary11, I have three ordered from Brushwood, so I can't wait to see how they arrive. I am sure I will not be disappointed. I have already received three from Bluestone, and I just can't enough good about their plants and shipping. I cut the three damaged ones back, and they are already looking a little greener, after a few 80-90 degree days. We are expecting 30 degrees tonight and a light snow, so I am scrambling to find a spot for 7 potted clematis, that are in 2 Gal pots. No garage. I did get a little carried away this winter on my clematis orders. Still have 5 coming after the 15th. Hopefully the weather will be nice again, after this week. I am very tempted to plant the three from Bluestone next week, but I do like to wait until they have a little harder stem on them. Omoshiro and Guernsey Cream where the hardest for me to find, sold out every place, so I hope they survive. This is a picture of my "Sweet Summer Love" that I received from Bluestone last week, they arrived perfect and have grown an inch already.

To continue the information blast regarding 'Howell's Dwarf' and in line with "Bluespruces" simple two sentence reply, we are 'probably' dealing with a possible two clones in the trade: (1) a Picea alcoquiana (bicolor is and old synonym and should no longer be used to name this species). (2) I have written a NEW record indicating that 'until the discrepency can be proven that all such plants named can be attibuted to either jezoensis or alcoqiana there will be two records in the ACS Database. Dont' expect to see the record I wrote immediately as it has to go through the chain of command before it will be released for viewing to the general public. There's a ton of records waiting for approval. I hope this will 'temporarily' clarify my intentions.... Dax

I'm no peony expert... but we're pretty impressed with the new "intersectional" hybrids... from Itoh. They are a cross between tree peonies and the traditional herbaceous peonies. The first one to hit wide distribution was Bartzella... we got some wholesale back in 2010. Klehm lists them as Tree Peonies but they make a lovely, sturdy bush here in Minnesota. Klehm's catalog has always been inspirational - but they are a high-end retailer for people willing to pay top dollar. I sold Bartzellas last year for $40. (Not advertising - I'm not selling any peonies... it was a one-time thing...). Unfortunately all these conifer names are not correctly written but I can help you with that :0)

Must be written as
Cupressus nootkatensis 'Green Arrow'

Picea pungens 'Golden Feather'
Must be written as
Picea pungens 'Golden Feathers'

Picea pungens 'Blue Falls':
This is nothing else then a renamed 'The Blues'.
They even put a trademark on it, what is that all about???

You know that is uncalled for to take a plant already in existence and give it another name. Misrepresentation to the unknowing buyer, let alone to the originator.

Larry Stanley gave scion wood to other nurserymen before he gave it a proper name. I am sure he will never make this mistake again. 'The Blues' is actually sold under 3 different cultivar names depending who you buy it from.

They seem to always have great stuff.

You can sometimes get some fairly pot bound material but hey you can get past that!

Thanks everybody for the positive comments and a special thanks to you coniferjoy for helping me with the correct names/spellings. I knew that it was iffy that I'd posted the correct names but I haven't printed my labels yet so no worries.

I find it really ironic that I had already placed my order with Klehm's for Picea pungens 'Blue Falls' (which I will tag with 'The Blues' of course) THEN bought pretty much the same tree with a different name at a local nursery. HA! My eye must like that color and form. It's all good. I have a pretty large yard and they both worked perfect where they are planted.

I am taking a garden bus trip June 2nd that will be visiting Klehm's in WI. I don't believe they are retail nursery any more so it will be interesting to see their operation and display gardens.

So, who has grown Fagus sylvatica 'Aurea Pendula'? Of course I've googled it but I'd like to hear first hand about people's success or issues with growing it. Anybody?
