I read about this a year or two ago. So of course I told my hubby and now he always asks me if I'm tending to my drug plants or not when I go out to the garden. He thinks he's funny.

Yup, I just saw this myself today. It looks like salvia divinorum isn't one that we would be likely to have, unless some of you are growing stuff you're not telling us about. :-)

omg, will it ever end?? There will always be something else, if someone wants to high. If there are no plants or chemicals, they go for partial strangulation. Fix the kids, not the substance. I think that the legislators need to figure that out, and that they cannot control the world. No more poppyseed muffins or strudel!!! Goodness. And Libby, don't forget the lovely castor bean plants.... this forum alone could poison most of North America!!

The war on drugs is not working. It can not work for the same reasons that the prohibition on the drug alcohol failed.

And I am a conservative Republican.

I forgot to state that the smoking salvia discussion was on the winter sowing forum.

A little bit of responsibility, exercise and productive work could do much to alter the reality of many of today's teens (in a positive way). Too bad gardening isn't a required subject in school!

I was given some starts of that salvia last year by a neighbor. When I read the article in the paper, I cracked up. I suppose I'm lucky it doesn't overwinter here, I'd be invaded either by the Feds or teenagers looking for a high. It just seems silly to me. When will my monkshood and foxgloves get outlawed?

They had a correctional facility for young offenders in my electoral area. They had a huge vegetable garden where the young inmates learned raised their own food. Others nearby had dairy cattle, and chickens that produced eggs. It not only taught them a skill or two, they had fresh food, and they had something to pass the day. The social workers decided the poor little dears were being exploited, and the unions for egg workers said they were scab labour. So much for a good idea.

And, btw, apparrently daffodils are an narcotic. According to the most recent 'Garden Life' mag, "..the botanical name Narcissus comes from the greek narkao, referring to the narcotic properties of the bulb." Whew!!

I checked and I'm OK.
