Erica Glasner's 'A Garden's Journal' is Back!

Starting Monday, March 26th at 8:00 am EDT, HGTV has Erica Glasner's show back on the air. I don't think they are her new episodes but I love her shows whether I've seen them before or not. She often features cottage style gardens.

That is GREAT news - I could watch her shows over and over. I do have about 10 of her shows on my TiVo that kept me going during the winter.

Another garden show has come back on HGTV also - on Tuesdays 12:00 noon and 12:30 are two back to back episodes of Secret Gardens. The ones this week were Richmond, Virginia and Vale, Colorado. Absolutely beautiful gardens. Maybe with spring here they are FINALLY getting the idea that some of their audience likes to garden - lol.....

Hello, All: I use the Neil Sperry gardening calendar and have done for 2 decades. Neil is an A&M-trained horticulturist who has had a radio program for 30+ years in the DFW Meteroplex and now has a monthly newsletter for all of Texas as well as the calendars and magazines. He's our Texas guru - the university research antithesis of the local, but also popular organic 'Dirt Doctor'. The calendars have a square for each day where I pencil in the temps and rain or whatever and the item(s) I'm focusing on that day. Of course, on busy gardening days I have to use a sort of shorthand, and for detailed analysis, I use a writing tablet of some sort and I save those. I like to go back years later and read one of my monthly reports from a garden walk-around. When I do that, I just jot down everything that occurs to me as I walk whether it's an observation of a plant or a note to myself to do better next time. What I really like about using the garden calender is that I can pick up a calendar for whatever year I want to refer to and turn to that month and see what was happening and compare it to what's happening in the current year. I can see when the ice storms hit and what damage was done and I can see how long a drought lasted and what I did about it. I can see when I sprayed for nutgrass and when it's time to spray again or when I started using Ornamec on the bermuda that crept into the liriope. I note when I took a tree out and what difference it made and how well the plants did with more sun or whether I had to rearrange the plants or replace them. I make a note of what kind of mulch I use and when I order bulk compost and how much. I can look back and remind myself what varieties I tried and when I lost them. : ( My calendars turn out to be kind of a table like Kay uses, but w/o as much detail and organized by month and day instead of location in the garden. I started getting the calendars because they came with my N.S. Texas Gardens magazine subscription, but as years went by, the calendars have come to mean much more to me than the magazine. I now want more detailed info than I can get in the magazine, and it's so easy to locate it online. I keep intending to punch holes in the calendars and put them in a binder and make a kind of book. (They're all the same size so this would be possible.) I've saved a couple of oversized binders for this, but I never can decide if I want to order the book by month or by year. As soon as I decide that I want to order my book by months (like having chapters of Januarys or Februarys, etc.) so I can flip through and see what happened in all years in the winter or summer or spring, I then realize that I really like being able to grab a calendar and see the progress of the garden from month to month for that particular year. Oh well. At the bottom of each month of calendar squares, Neil lists must-do garden tasks for particular areas of Texas as well as cautions and other reminders. This is not so valuable now that I've grown as a gardener and don't need the reminders. Now I'd rather have more space to write. But all in all, I'm really glad I have the calendars and have kept records. I did a Google search for Irises & Roses and Gardenweb. Found it on the first hit. As for the camera. Okay let me just say that I'm terrible with technology. I can use my computer at work because I've got the best tech support in the world, but I'm intimidated by the fancier cell phones, blackberries, etc. I didn't open my digital camera until a full year after it was given to me for Christmas. I used it while on vacation two weeks ago but haven't tried to download the images to my computer. The instruction manual alone is as thick as my thumb. Why is it necessary to have to take a class in order to use a fricken camera? Of course my partner says I'm terrible with anything outside of my normal routine. I've got an Irish Lap Harp (another X-Mas gift) that has been sitting in its case along with the instruction book and cd for three years. I even bought an electronic tuner - not that I know how to use it. The reason I like gardening is because the technology doesn't keep changing every time I blink. Okay, you have to stay on top of the latest chemicals and creative watering techniques, but the rest is a pretty static skill. And I don't follow landscape fads. Just my two cents worth, Patrick

Carol, with Canon it's the Zoombrowser software that comes with the camera under Tools. My camera has several modes on the dial and Photo Stitching is one of them. (DH says the Windows Vista does it, too.) It was truly easy. Download the camera, click Tools, click Stitch, select which photos to use, and then it does it. All you do then is crop the photo to get rid of the arcs around the edges of the montage. I bet it took less than a minute - even for me. Sherry

My journaling has ebbed and flowed with the times, sometimes I am a prolific writer and cataloger of my life and gardens, other times, not so much. This year I ran out of room in the journal I have been keeping for five or six years now, I just checked and the last entry was June 6 of this year when I said I was running out of room in the journal! I guess that would be a good thing to ask for as a Christmas gift from someone. Wow mariannese, 28 years of journaling! What a lovely history for you, and perhaps family members who would love to see those memories and knowledge for the future. What a treasure. Some years ago I took a class in Women's Journals and Memoirs. It really honed my writing skills and dicipline to write daily. I learned the things you write about don't have to be life changing or monumental, just daily musings about what you experienced and saw and felt that day, nothing more. That's what great about journaling, you aren't out to write the Great American Novel (or Danish or Chinese or any other nationality) but just documenting your life in a way. I tend to mix personal feelings in with garden notations, I think the two are often intertwined. I love to throw in sketches in my journal as well, sometimes plans for a new garden, sometimes just a quick drawing of my dog lying on the porch, or whatever inspires me at the time. Some of the plans in my journal are invaluable to remembering where I planted what! I tend to list new plants I bought and where I planted them (thankfully) so I can find them later and remember their names. In essence, I keep most of my personal thoughts and ramblings in my handwritten journal, but I am also a relentless cataloger and organinzer of plants which I do on the computer. I have lists and charts galore of roses and other plants with photos in my own personal database that I can reference from time to time. It also keeps me busy during the winter months when cataloging and organizing is my only garden chore. Here are some random excerpts from my journal 2009: 2/28 I've ordered 21 roses (eek!) and now I have to figure out where to plant them all... "Gardening is the slowest of the performing arts" 4/23 Zandi's 16th birthday! 4 eggs in the bluebird nest. Going to be a warm weekend, temps in the 80s. Pruned back all old canes on Maggie - she's put up 3 new thick basals so we'll see how she does... There's a Carolina wren nesting in the garage amid the spray bottles...good thing I don't keep toxic chemicals! 4/28 Cardinals have a nest in Knockout. Now I can't SP it. 5/1 Happy May Day! Ugh, its raining - again. 6/6 I'm running out of room in this book...ripped out KO today (yay!) and replaced it with Earthsong... Happy journaling everyone!

Hip, hip, Hooray!!

I too noticed that HGTV is bringing back shows from their golden days -- when they had shows that really were "home and garden". Although I love Erica's show, I still wonder why we're not worthy of new shows of the same caliber.

Oh well, I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, eh :-)

Well, that means I gotta get up a 1/2 hour earlier, doesn't it! I usually sleep in on Monday since I get up so early to watch Gardening by the Yard on Sunday!

Oh it's a miracle. I will take any of her shows! Love her and love her show! I have really missed some of the older HGTV gardening shows.

Ooops! I guess I was too excited and/or still half asleep this morning when I posted about Erica Glasner's show! (A Gardener's Journal was the show out of Canada that I liked watching too)

It's a Gardener's Diary and I have some on my TiVo that I've watched a bunch of times, I especially like the ones showing gardens in the Atlanta area.

Thanks for the info about The Secret Gardens, I haven't seen those and will TiVo them too.

THe show was excellent this morning - she visited a garden in Tucker GA - an older couple that had lived there almost all their married lives. Very beautiful and always changing. It was such a pleasant way to spend the morning with my first cup of coffee - I was in gardeners heaven......

Wasn't this morning's show wonderful? I love that garden, so lush and green. I watched it twice since I recorded it. Since Erica lives in Altanta, lot of her shows are about gardens right here. I save them to watch again for inspiration, especially in the winter months when I'm planning my projects.

I am soooo envious of you guys, a gardening show on HGTV, whatever are they thinking of, somebody must have slipped at head office or maybe it was sabotage. If you ever find the culprit please send him to HGTV Canada.
I have never seen A gardener's Diary, from what I read here it sounds like a great show. We use to have A Gardener's Journal, I think the best gardening show ever IMO, now all we have is Curb Appeal, I haven't found the Appeal yet, I've seen a few Curbs though, I don't watch it any more. Nothing in it for the real gardener.

Bloomingame - it certainly was - while not a typical 'flower' garden it was just the most peaceful place - I would LOVE to be able to have 1/10 of what he had in woodland gardens. All that rock hardscaping was to die for - how wonderful his grandchildren

Secret Gardens is on 12 noon and 12:30est with two seperate episodes Tuesday on HGTV. - I love that show also.....

What has happened to "A Gardener's Journal?!" Does anyone know if HGTV has stopped airing this show temporarily or permanently? I love this show and would be so disappointed if I could no longer watch it. Even if there are no more "new" episodes, there are so many shows in this series one would think they could simply start the series from the beginning and the old shows would be "fresh" again. I agree with previous posts - this is one of the few shows truly for gardeners. Is a write-in campaign to HGTV in order?

I too miss Erica but haven't any of these peole ever heard of video taping? I taped many of her shows and would have been lost the past winter without them. If she returns, you can bet I;ll have my vcr going again. Thanks to the producers or whomever!
