Growing mushrooms?
Comments (6)There are methods to collect spores which are described in Stammets book, and I think it would be possible to d that with shop bought mushrooms. However you still would have to know how the mushroom looks like and if there look alikes whan you are growing them in the open. Many mushrooms are grown on wood which should be recently cut and I would love to grow some mushrooms I think it is not so easy to get freshly cut wood and the spawns in the same time (but in Australia we don't get spawns easily)....See MoreGrowing Mushrooms
Comments (0)After pouring through books and websites, we have decided, we think, that we have sweetdough or sweetbread mushrooms growing under our maple tree in our Missoula, MT yard. My brave 19 yr old has tested them twice at recommended intervals with no ill effects. In fact said they were delicious. I know we saw them last year, so am pretty sure they'll come back. Wondering if anyone has ideas on how to ensure their return and perhaps how to boost quantity and possible second flush......See MoreGrowing Mushrooms in Colorado?
Comments (6)Linked is the website for Rakhra mushrooms, grown in the San Luis valley - for those not familiar with the place, its a high desert environment known for growing potatoes and migrating Sandhill Cranes ..... Anyway, clicking around the link gives some interesting stuff. Not mentioned at the link, they collect chicken house litter, compost it themselves to sterilize it, then inoculate it for mushrooms. We can sometimes buy the used, "mushroom compost" for a couple bucks a bag at the local Safeway. I also thought it was interesting that the company is owned and managed by a Sikh family, and many of their employes are from a single village in Guatemalans - just not something one would expect in the San Luis Valley. But then they also have alligator / tilapia farms there as well :-) We buy and eat them all the time. Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreGrowing mushrooms on cardboard
Comments (4)Ah, @thonotorose, you are definitely our angel of the organic, making sure we don't poison ourselves or anything around us. The way I see it, if people have been doing this for a long time, and they haven't died yet, there probably isn't much danger. Surely, there is no more danger than planting them on rotting logs, since tree roots spread far down into the water table, picking up all sorts of yukky stuff along the way, not to mention the toxins they gather from the air....See Morejenny_in_se_pa
