What great plants. The Glacier Blue looks like the color is wonderful. That green on Steuben is phenomenal and the yellow/green combo on 'Niescke Cream' really catches the eye also. Really some choice conifers here Matt.

Larix 'Steuben':
I always wondered if this is a cultivar of Larix laricina or Larix decidua.
The 'Steuben' is mentioned as a witches' broom of both species...
what's the colour of it's young twigs, is it yellowish or more purplebrown?

Please change Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Niescke Cream'
into 'Nitschke Cream'.
It was found as a seedling selection by P.C. Nitschke.

Edwin, 'Steuben' has yellowish-brown young twigs. I compared it with my Larix laricina and decidua species plants and it appears most similar to laricina. Thanks for the name correction, I will update my database.

Your post is interesting to me on a personal basis since I've also been accumulating plants for ~5 years. I'm at about 100 compared to your 200, but I'll wager that I've killed a lot more than you. I went through a phase where I tried (repeatedly) to dig up plants in September and move them to more exposed locations. I'll just say that didn't ever work well.

Are all your plants in the ground? How large is your property? Trying to get a better conception of your collection.

Matt, you're welcome.
You mentioned that your 'Steuben' does have yellowish coloured twigs, so it's a Larix decidua witches'broom instead of a Larix laricina witches'broom.
The correct name is then Larix decidua 'Steuben'...

Alex, the big mistake you made by trying transplanting conifers in September is the following:
Direct transplanting doesn't work well, especialy for older specimens.
The first thing you've to do in the first week of September is that you've to cut off the roots by shovel and leave the plants alone for about six weeks.
In the meanwhile the plants made some new roots and are ready for transplanting.
You'll see, by doing it this way you won't have any losses at all.

Will, the 'Nitschke Creeam' must be planted in full sun to enjoy it's stunning colour.
I never saw any burning damage, this is because there's also some green in it's needles.

Edwin, interesting what you mentioned about the transplanting. What I don't get is if you cut the roots and leave it, don't you just cut the roots again when you transplant or is it generating roots further inside from where you made the cut?

Matt, good stuff. Knew if was a matter of time before we get to see the show. 'Blue Cloak' is a nice larger size specimen that is already an attention getter.

Will, by cutting of the roots it will make a nice compact rooting system, also in the furthur inside.
It's possible that some roots will be damaged when the plant will be dug up but you don't have to worrie about that because it does have planty of other new one's...

You have a super fine collection of choice conifers! Most of them I have never heard of.

Alex, I live in an apartment in Minneapolis, so these guys are at my parents' place for now. They live on two mostly wooded acres. I've already cut down as many trees that are realistically possible and my dad refuses to let me expand into his precious yard so my space is becoming limited. I still have about 3-4 years before I can buy my own house so we'll see how I can still feed my addiction.

Will, I'm sure we got our 'Nitschke Cream's from the same source. Mine gets less than 4 hours of morning sun each day. I was concerned about it burning so I sited it where it would get no afternoon sun. Are you saying that you wish yours would get some green on it? Because I think yours looks pretty cool.
