I can't believe we're almost to the end of the alphabet already! I wouldn't think there aren't too many X's...but you never know.
I have more W's than this but many were too new to have bloomed. I love having so many new faces to greet me in 2012. Love that feeling of waking up and wandering around the garden and seeing what's opened up. That seems like a long way from now since we're getting a snowstorm all day today. I am enjoying everyone's photos!

I've linked to the fuller discussion of The New Encyclopedia of Daylilies below. I'll most likely get that book, too. Well, Grosvenor doesn't include Becky Lynn, and while all six books include Fairy Tale Pink, I don't have a copy of Munson's book here, and I have no more than the name written down in my notes. So Barbara Mitchell, it is: Barbara Mitchell Reviews: Barbara Mitchell (Pierce 85) SSM [Stout Silver Medal], Dip, Dormant (in most areas), Height 45 cm (22"), Flower 15 cm (6"), Midseason, Reblooming. Voluptuous, wide, recurved, ruffled, soft light pink with overlapping petals, faintest rose band in hot climates, green throat. The pink pigment may have beige undertones in cooler climates; deeper pink veins create the impression of corduroy texture. Well-branched scapes. Slightly tender without snow cover or mulch in cold-winter regions but consistently good in most areas. Also a tetraploid conversion which is used by many breeders to produce better substance in the flowers, eg 'Pink Ambrosia' (pg 81). 'Tet Barbara Mitchell' (John Benz) is also known to double the fragrance in its offspring. (The Gardener's Guide to Growing Daylilies by Diana Grenfell, p 59) - a picture is included on pg 49 Barbara Mitchell (Charlie Pierce 1985) Semi-evergreen. Scape 20" (50.8 cm); Flower 6" (15.2 cm). Midseason. Pink Self with green throat. Diploid. 'Fairy Tale Pink' x 'Beverly Ann'. Award of Merit 1990. L. Stout Silver Medal 1992. (The Color Encyclopedia of Daylilies by Ted L. Petit & John P. Peat, p 39) - a picture is included of every daylily. This is listed in the chapter of the History of Daylily Hybridizing, rather than in the pink section, so I missed it before. Barbara Mitchell (Charles F. Pierce 1985) Semi-evergreen. Scape 20" (50.8 cm); Flower 6" (15.2 cm). Midseason. A pink self with a green throat. Diploid. 'Fairy Tale Pink' x 'Beverly Ann'. Stout Silver Medal 1992. (The Daylily: A Guide for Gardeners by John P. Peat, p 135) - no picture. This is listed in the chapter on Award-Winning Daylilies, so I missed it before. Barbara Mitchell (Pierce) Semi-evergreen to Dormant, Height 60 cm (24"), Dip, Midseason, Reblooming. Gorgeous, rounded and ruffled pink with a green throat. Wide overlapping petals and superb form. This is an outstanding daylily in every way and is deservedly popular. It will be grown with pride for many years. 'Barbara Mitchell' is one of the top three daylilies grown in the USA and will be equally popular in Australia when better known. It has proven an easy grower and is a garden spectacle. Photo p. 54. (Daylilies for the Garden by Graeme Grosvenor, pg 56) Barbara Mitchell1984 (Pierce) Semi-evergreen. 20". Midseason. 6", opulent pale pink, with narrow pink eye band, and a green throat. Diploid. Photo same page. (Hemerocallis, The Daylily by R.W. Munson, Jr., p 65) - This may include the metric measurements, too. I'm not sure. Cultivar - Color and Form - Barbara Mitchell - An outstanding pink from Fairy Tale Pink - Foliage Type - Bloom Season - Scape Height - Blossom Diameter - Other Characteristics - Hybridizer & Date Semi-evergreen - M - 20" - 6" - [blank] - Pierce 1984 (Daylilies, The Perfect Perennial by Lewis and Nancy Hill, p 162) - This chart is on a 2-page spread. It is a lot easier to read as a table in the book. There is also a picture on pg 149.

How could I have forgotten GUNS OF NAVARRONE? It's been spectacular - always beautiful. A few others that come to mind (some bloomed for the first time this summer): AUGUSTAN AGE (Moldovan-Woodhall) lavender rose blend - possibly too much rose to be included?; D'ARTAGNAN (Moldovan 2006); GRAPESICLE (Waldrop); JAUNTING JUNEBUGBAIT (K. Roberts), PAMELA duCROZAT TREVATHAN (Forrester), RAMA LAMA DING DONG (Williams-Bachman) flesh lavender self and I probably shouldn't be including it as it blooms very, very pale lavender for me. But so pretty!; VAMPIRE BAT (Gossard). Nancy, I agree with you: BELA LUGOSI is more often red than "purple," but I was following the registration info. I have some that look sort of purple that were registered as "black"; clearly, they aren't actually black. I'd probably call them purple or red. But I should tell you that, sometimes, when the stars have aligned perfectly, BELA LUGOSI has in fact bloomed in the most perfect purple I've ever seen in a daylily. It doesn't happen very often however.

Thanks Shirley & Nancy. : ) I didn't notice the "smoke cloud" until after I got home and loaded the pics into my computer. Nancy, the entire exterior of our house will be brick, w/ possibly some stonework here and there. Not sure yet. We'll make it up as we go. But mainly brick (same as chimney). We bricked our current home back when we were remodeling it and DH did some "fancy" stuff....we've got several brick arches, quoined corners, etc. We aren't going to be doing much of that on the new house. I'm going for a simple, rustic look. The front of the house will have a porch or deck all the way across.....it's kind of hard to explain. I think we will be using a material such as Trex to build it. We are looking for no maintenance for the entire exterior and don't want to have to paint, stain, etc. anything. I've picked all of our colors to match very closely, but to have slight differences. Like the shingles, for example. They are overall only about 1 or 2 shades darker than the brick, but have mixed colors in them. One of the colors matches the brick perfectly. Well, i've got to get ready to head over there....we started working on installing a gate at the end of our driveway last night which involved much more than you would think. DH is building large soil berms (planting beds!!!!) along the road to keep anyone from driving in. In the midst of all of this, he dug up a buried telephone line and tore it in half. You can only imagine how furious he is. This was never marked by the utility company when we first started our building process and it should have been. So now we are at a stand-still until someone decides to come out and look at it today. I thought it would have affected neighbors (no phone service?), but nobody called to report it yet (maybe because they don't have a working phone??? LOL). We're hoping it's an old line, or maybe an unused one. It never ends....... HUGS, ~Dawn (mamabirrd) PS: No baby yet! C'mon Talon!! : ) I am soooooo sore and am barely able to waddle along.

Ok, you girls need to settle down! You're getting way too roudy without me! I know I'm a little late posting, but.... Pat, I'm going to guess Peony and Tracy I'm guessing turtle doll chair snowman chalk rocking horse raccoon watering can miniature golf club snail garden ornament How did I do??? LOL Ok, ok, I will have to make sure I'm around for this next game! You girls did a great job with the games! I was trying to read all the posts but you gals have been chatting away! So... I was just kinda skimming through them and seen 'PLANTS HAVE ARRIVED1!!!!! MAILMAN IS DEAD!!!!OH NO!!!!' and had to go back and see WHY Carmen killed her mailman! ROFL That does sound like an awesome box Carmen!! I'm getting swap envie, who is hosting next month? I think I will have to join, after all it is my Birthday month so I need to do something special right!?! Oh, and Carmen, LOVE your garden pics! and the dry stream bed! I really want to put one of those in, I just haven't done it yet. Sassy! I missed something, I didn't know you were working now, congrats! and Yeah, it's kinda a bummer to have to sacrafice other things isn't it, I know just how you feel girl! Tracy, in regards to the 'kiddie' pool, well, it is a little bigger than that, I guess I meant little in that it's only 3 1/2 feet deep and you blow up the ring and it floats up and holds the sides up. Anyhow... after the 2 days and 2 truckloads of sand (thankfully they were free), I knew it wasn't perfect, but figured since it isn't that deep it would be ok to be a little uneven. SOOOOO I had our water guy come out and fill it with 4000 gallons of water (for $80) and I think it lasted all of about 6 HOURS!!!! THEN!!!! We heard something, the neighbors came running over with their flashlights and the pool was empty!! 'sniff sniff' Yep, all 4000 gallons of water and if that wasn't bad enough, it all went to the field behind us, so it didn't even water OUR yard! 'sigh' So, where ARE those pina coladas???? : ) Lisa, so sorry your neck is acting up again! Hope it gets better soon! Fran, you and your nose! You have as much (maybe even more) trouble as I do, it stinks don't it? Hope your doing better now too dear! Karen, I can understand you wanting to sit this one out after winning, but if it would make you feel better, you just send me all your guesses and then it will be like you are playing! I checked the AHS data base and there are only 21 daylilies registered with names starting with X. No wonder we didn't come up with many.
