For this year, there is 15.19" of missing rain here from the average of 25.78". That's a shortage of 59%.

What are your numbers?

I'm not sure what my numbers are, but I bet they're even lower. I just read that Texas is in its third worst drought in history, and since October we've had a long string of "driest [insert month here]'s" in history.

My city is about to go into Stage 3 water restrictions, which limits watering to once a week by hand or by soaker hose, and once every two weeks by sprinkler.

Stage 4 is as high as it goes.

I'm in the maroon bit. "Exceptional" drought, the worst category. This drought is already the third worst in history, and considering how it's only June, it's probably not going to get any better for a while and could possibly end up the worst in history.

So far, soil moisture is normal/good here. This current drought seems focused on Texas, Oklahoma, Gulf states and parts of Florida. Last Summer saw SEVERE drought though and August is no longer the WETTEST month of the year--now it seems likely to be drought month. Winter precip (rain and snow) seems much higher now--high enough to fill the aquifers and get us through the dry season. I have a feeling though that it's about to get hotter and DRIER on the East coast now.--Droughts tend to expand and spread more drought.

Our newspaper says we've gotten 4.5 inches in October for an annual total of 35.06 inches so far. Normal is 49.68. And last year we had 29 inches all year. Not good. We don't have reservoirs. We drain the underground aquifer which I guess is in adequate shape except in inland places where coastal communities tap in because they have no aquifer. But my birdbath filled twice this last week. Rain has been pretty spotty. Thankfully, my house has been under it recently. Not so previously. Seems like it rains once a month now in the land of daily summer thunderstorms. I'm so glad you folks north of here are finally getting wet. And stop carrying those umbrellas. You know it never rains when you're ready for it. BTW, the Corps of Engineers has to slow (or stop) pumping at some point. People are more important than paper mills and rare species. Duh! Sherry

There is no amount anyone can offer because container, soil mix etc. Rule of thumb, water until it is running completely through the holes in the container. Completely saturate every inch of soil. This forces out the used air and as it dries it 'inhales' fresh air flow. It's important to water this way because oxygen is the the best 'medicine' for the roots. It kills most pathogens and prevents root rot and a number of other common root diseases. By contrast improper watering sets up container bound trees for failure and future diseases. Far as your solvable fertilizers here is what I use. I have a container that I measured and marked gallon levels.... I mix it in that then just pour from the container. But I would strongly encourage to err on the side of caution esp as your new to this. You can't use too little but you can (and I've seen far too many people) kill their plants using too strong and/or applying too frequently. If you have small newly establishing trees a tiny amnt of fertilizer is all they can use.... if you over apply it can build up toxicity in the soil and quickly overwhelm, burn and kill the tree. I've lost count of new plant owners who accidentally killed their tree (or plants) by 'kindness'. Hope that helps :)

This rainfall map from the OK Mesonet shows, in numerics, the rainfall recorded at each OK Mesonet station. Of course, the rainfall at any given place can vary from the rainfall recorded at that area's Mesonet station. Thanks Rita Re alternate cooking weeks: some things you do for maintaining marital harmony :) because our grocery shopping, meal palnning, our cooking styles and our clean up routines are so opposite to each other.. in fact that's true for a lot of how we both think and work... so different .... reminds me when we were at Sedona many years ago and got our auras read(it's the new age method where they read the energy you generate as colors ). And our aura reader was amazed that DH and I were Married because our auras were so contrasting, none of our colors matched..except this teeny tiny bit of green ..and she claimed that's what made us click in the cosmic sense. We both had a good laugh about it afterwards anyways back on the kitchen : our current kitchen is one cook\one eat space. Wonder if our cookin schedules will change with our new kitchen ....

Had some short rains here lately but still missing just under 20" from normal, a deficit of 53%. Since most of it runs off instead of soaking into the hydrophobic soil, 2 days later everything is wilted again.

Since last September I have had just a hair under 6". Our average rainfal is supposed to be 34" per year.

Let's see. Normal 35" and I have had 5 3/4". That is 29" and she is still not raining. Another La Nina.

we are 10 below The farmers are really suffering but some places are worse. Not a good year at all
