I tried pressing flowers for the first time, and it was a disaster. When I checked on the flowers a week later, they were rotting. I'm not sure what I did wrong.

I pressed the flowers in blank newspring paper. I put a few layers of gift tissue papers between my newsprint layers. I used a couple of brick to provide the weight.

I've been reading about pressing flowers, and I thought I followed the instructions. I'm not sure what I did wrong.

If you are pressing without heat, you need to put your flowers between two layers of paper towel (viva is good, as it has no pattern) and then put that into an old telephone book and then weight it down good. Give it several weeks.
On the other hand I use my microwave.
I take a old hard bound book, use the two layer of viva and put my paper/flower/paper into the pages of the book and then microwave at low power for 2-3 min. Then let it cool under weight. You may need to let it dry a little more, but not the two weeks, maybe over night or several days

I wonder if your flowers were damp; that's the only thing I know that would cause them to rot. Pick the blooms after 10 am or later so the sun has dried the dew. Don't give up-flower drying and pressing involves a lot of trial-and-error, but the results are worth it.

I have been making greeting cards for years! I was using Perfect Paper Adhesive but here in Hawaii, unbenounced to me, there are little tiny almost invisible to the eye, BUGS! And, they ”continue to eat the flowers once sealed with PPA!“ I have found my best bet and failure free ”Mod Podge” is the BEST sealant! I use the matte, not the glossy and I must say my cards turn out beautiful and best of all, they last a lifetime! I have done a lot of experimenting with varios glues, adhesives and I always return to Mod Podge! As far as pressing flowers, try to use those that have the same thickness. This allows for even drying. The larger flowers with big, bulky centers, i.e,. cosmos cosmos, I take the centers out, press the petals and save the seeds to grow more cosmo’s. I am also a huge fan of placing the flowers beteen 2 pieces of Bounty paper towel. This is the only paper towel I can find that doesn’t have a design with depth to it. I am also a die-hard put my flowers in a big heavy book followed by several other heavy books then and I wait 4-5 days to check on them. I think the biggest thrill for me to this day is peeking under the paper towel to see how they’ve dried! Seriously, my heart flutters with joy when I first set look at them! I get giggly just before opening the book! As an added note, I seem to always use too much Mod Podge which nearly always makes me press the finished card back into the large book and stacking several more heavy books on top of them! This pressed flower card making has saved my life!! I have been suffering from debilitating fibromyalgia for over 15 years now and this is one thing that gets my mind off of the pain I feel every day! And, if I might be so bold, I have gotten better and better as the years go by! I hope any of the information I have shared will help or inspire anyone to make flowers which are already beautiful into a life-lasting treasure by turning them into something someone you love can have as a memory for life! Susan, I store my pressed flowers in the magic cling pages that come with the 3 ring binder photo albums.I think they used to call them magnetic photo albums. I have used these for the last couple of years. The cling pages hold the flowers in place and they stay nice. I keep all the pages in the 3 ring binder, you can then just flip through the binder and see what you have. I buy the binder at the dollar store for $5.00 and it comes with 50 pages. Hope this helps. Here's how I press flowers successfully. I use an old phone book. Begin about 100 pages from the back. Fold down a bit at the corner. Continue coming forward and fold down a corner every 50 or 100 pages. The corner folds will help you locate your pressed material.

Now you are ready to gather flowers in the morning without any moisture from the dew.

Pansies wwork well. Any blossoms that are thin and flat. Pull the petals from flowers with thick centers such as daiseys or carnations. Leaves can be pressed, too.

At the back of your book, arrange a single layer of blossoms or petals. Carefull cover with the next section and hold firmly as you arrange the next layer of floral material. Continue. Then place a flat weight of 10# or more on the book. It takes at least 2 weeks, so wait to check.

Don't know what it is about the paper or ink in the phone book, but I have used my books repeatedly and have never had the paper wrinkle or the ink come off on the floral material.
