Abies koreana x Abies fraseri

Does anyone have examples of this cross?....I haven't heard of it but assume it's possible.....Females cones on my koreana's have been exposed to a ample supply of fraseri pollen.....What are the odds?

According to Keith Rushforth 'Conifers' they both fall into the same grouping which would mean they'd pollinate each other.

Group 7: sibirica, semenovii, nephrolepis, sachalinensis, veitchii, koreana, sikokiana, kawakamii, lasiocarpa, balsamea, fraseri.

Resin noted that Abies kawakamii has moved to within another group, however. This 'Group 2' which contains:
alba, cephalonica, nordmanniana, borisii-regis, bornmuelleriana, nebrodensis, equi-trojani. Here's to

My discussion with Resin:
(Quoting Resin when I asked him about this earlier):

"Yes, within Abies fairly acccurately so. There's been one or two changes in the composition of some of the groups with subsequent genetic evidence (Abies kawakamii moved from Group 7 [balsamea etc.] to Group 4 [homolepis etc.]; and Groups 2 [alba etc.] & 3 [pinsapo etc.] merged into one group), but they've held up to genetic investigation quite strongly."

Here's Rushforth's Groups:

Group 1 bracteata.
Group 2 alba, cephalonica, nordmanniana, borisii-regis, bornmuelleriana, nebrodensis, equi-trojani.
Group 3 pinsapo, numidica, cilicica, tazaotana, marocana
Group 4 firma, homolepis, recurvata, pindrow, gamblei, chensiensis, holophylla, beshanzuensis [kawakamii].
Group 5 amabilis, mariesii.
Group 6 spectabilis, densa, delavayi, forrestii, fabri, fargesii, squamata, chengii.
Group 7 sibirica, semenovii, nephrolepis, sachalinensis, veitchii, koreana, sikokiana, [kawakamii - moved to group 4], lasiocarpa, balsamea, fraseri.
Group 8 grandis, concolor, durangensis, coahuilensis, mexicana, guatemalensis.
Group 9 procera, magnifica.
Group 10 religiosa, vejari, hickelii, oaxacana.

Noting once again that Rushforth's groupings of Group 2 and 3 have now merged... 'with strong genetic investigation' - Resin.

Right on, except A. kawakamii was moved to group 4, not group 2

man thats some nice edging.. you ought to do a pic tutorial on that is that st andrews gold course behind.. at first it looked like a mess.. but the more i looked at it.. i like the wildness of it ... my favorite kor is aurea ... ken first the species .. which now that it is getting bigger i can see the white undersides with out laying on the ground ... and it coned pretty young ... i have had to repeatedly remove multiple leaders.. i blame birds ... and the neighbor is the one who decorated it ... and here is aurea ... and 'silver show/silberloche'.. isnt too bad .. i cant tell them apart .. [i can never remember if its loche or locke]

Dave, On a similar note, I've noticed more of a short-term preservation issue with the usage of Photobucket. Far be it from a periodic 'grazer' like me to tell regulars here how to post images, but seems lots of folks love Photobucket, and if you're going to spend the time uploading pictures, you might as well use something that is going to last and not disappear after 2 years or when your pictures take up too much bandwidth because it's a heavily viewed thread. It's always a shame to look back through some older posts and see the vast majority of pictures missing. This may have come up previously, but I've not seen it addressed. I've had good success with Picasa and Flickr, myself. Just food for thought, as I know it's a great deal of work to take these pictures, upload them, make a post, discuss, etc.... Steg

i thought.. in my very special z5 MI ... i was the only one who could grow A kor .... as the further south you go... the less likely you are of success ... you really didnt ask if the plant was going to live in your zone 7 ???? if it wont.. cone color might not be the definitive variable to choose on... take a latin name.. and add ANNUAL GROWTH RATE ... and on searching.. you will find out how fast they grow up ... MOST size estimates are that growth rate times ten [or take the estimate.. and divide by 10 ... for the same info .. backwards ..] presume at 20 years.. it will be twice as big.. 3 times at 3 decades ... etc ... coning cant take up to 10 years ... to start ... so you might want to focus on color .. texture.. and growth rate... before you ever get to cone color .... ken

Or you could put the new tree in the existing bed, keep it out of the way of mowing. If you put a tree where the x is you will have to cut out a circle of grass which is kept away from the tree until it is large enough to compete with the grass. So then you would have a bigger bed on the left and a dot bed nearby, which might make it look like the two needed to be joined into one. If you aren't going to develop entire new beds of plantings to flow around the pines - these would have to be pretty big to be in scale with the conifers - it would probably be better to just leave the trees with grass coming up to their trunks - a gracious effect that not everyone is able to achieve - and plant something additional near the bird bath to add interest to that part of the property. Another option would be clinging or supported (netting, wires...) climbing plants on the bare trunks. Ribbons of flaming red Parthenocissus seen against the bluish pine foliage in autumn would be wonderful, but these are large growing and vigorous - you would have to be comfortable with them getting all over the trees in time. If you want to try something like that I would plant one kind of climber in the one spot and another kind in the other. Maybe a fall foliage effect here and a flower display there.
