Today I decided to swing by a nursery I used to visit some time before we moved. Their selection of cacti and succulents was usually pretty slim, but I had made friends with the owner/manager, and I hadn't seen her in a while, so I wanted to say hi and catch up.

To my absolute and utter delight, she had significantly grown her C&S selection! So, of course, I just went nuts. :)

Well, ok, I did exercise some self-control. I only bought 5 plants. :) (She gave me one free, cuz we exchange plants sometimes, plus a few cuttings.) Most of them didn't have labels, so if you know what they are, your two cents is hugely appreciated!

Smoe sort of Crassulaceae, I presume. Anyone know what, specifically? I have one of these in a dusty lavender-ish color; this one is variegated.

A lovely little Haworthia! Any guess as to species? (Hopefully I won't kill this one - I tend not to do well with Haworthias.)

The lighting in the photo actually sort of washes this one out a bit. It's a much deeper, richer purple-ish color. An Escheveria of some sort?

Some sort of Euphorbia. Anyone?

I am so excited about this one - a Pony Tail Palm! Label says it's Beaucarnea recurvata. This is my first! :)

This was the freebie - I know, Mother-of-Thousands seems to be an unpopular plant, but I like it. (She was going to give me a cactus, but I actually picked this one out.)

A Dragonfruit cutting. Anyone have suggestions on how to root it?

Next two are leaves she let me take from parent plants. The first one looks like some sort of sedum to me (but I'm known to be wrong); the second one is NOT a Tomentosa, I promise. The leaves are generally large and plump, and somewhat serrated at the tips. Any IDs?

I'm just so excited! I told her I'd be back on Tuesday (she's closed tomorrow, and I have class on Monday) with some of my own plants for exchange (since she gave me the MOT and the cutting and leaves). I might have to buy a few more, too... She had a few unusual looking specimens that I really hated to not take home with me today!

Very nice variegated Crassula perforata, I think, and Haworthia fasciata, and with the lighting I'm not positive whether that's perhaps Echeveria 'Black Prince.'

lydia1959, it's just a half barrel liner buried in the garden. The pump I use has a small removable filter that helps keep the water clean. When I had fish in the pond the filter needed to be cleaned every few weeks, but with no fish (sadly the racoons got them) it stays clear on it's own. If I notice that the volume of water being pumped is down, I rinse out the filter and all is good again. The birds and squirrels love it!

eww, that's not so good. The soil is wet? I've never had a problem with overwatering these... they take some abuse and are some of my most resilient plants. This guy lives on my porch, taken from cuttings last year.

Ingrid--try it! I don't like orange roses, either. OK, in tight bud, the color is somewhat orangey but it very quickly changes. I'll try to post a few more pix to illustrate. See Catspat's wonderful photos above and more on HMF. It seems to stay open on the plant (and indoors) for quite some time, and at that point it's beautiful and cream/apricot. I'm quite sure you wouldn't regret it. Jin, I don't know anything about growing roses in Fla, but as for blackspot -- see the earlier posts. My garden is tops for blackspot! I just accept it, to a degree most of you couldn't stand. But GAC has been very, very clean, like Buff Beauty or other hybrid musks, and this is just a baby plant. It's vigorous, growing fast, and as you can see in Catspat's photo of her mature plant, just a stunning thing. Catspat and I are both in California but in very different climates -- I'm in the cool damp fog and she's in the dry inland heat, and GAC is healthy in both areas. Mary, where are you located, in what kind of conditions? Would love to see photos of your GAC, also. I have been lucky with my cuttings, for the most part. Good luck with your next attempt at GAC.

Ersatz Master Jeff here - that last is indeed Cotlyedon tomemtosa v. tomentosa (or v. ladismithiensis), IMO.

For rooting the Hylo cutting, see the posting on rooting Pereskia that's current. You can also do a search here - it's been written about recently. The other leaves are too immmature to say what they are for sure, but my first guess would be a Graptoveria.

Collen's nailed the other ones. I don't know Euphorbias, but maybe E. trigona?

Nice looking plants - they should grow well for you.

Teatree: Crassula perforata variegata. Fantastic. :) Thanks so much! The Haworthia fasciata - I did a search and found images that matched what I have, but also found images under Haworthia attenuata that match as well. Are the two similar enough that they can be confused? I'll keep looking. Thanks again. And Echeveria "Black Prince" sure seems to match as well. Thanks times three! :)

Cactus: My apologies, when I said it's not a Tomentosa, I meant a Kalanchoe tomentosa. (Now I must look up the etymology of the word "tomentosa.") So, Cotlyedon tomentosa. I'll look that (and the suggested variations) up. And I believe a good, "Oh, that's right - I knew that!" is in order on the recent thread regarding Hylo cuttings. I'll go back and re-read that, and do some more digging (for info). Thanks!

The little beanie-looking leaves came from something that looked somewhat like this:

It was all spilling out of a hanging pot. What did I suggest at first, a sedum? Nevermind that. I knew it was a sede-semper-sedu-something.

When I go back on Tuesday, I'll bring my camera and see if the owner will let me take some pictures.

Teatree: After doing a little digging online, I'm thinking that Echeveria is actually a "Black Knight," rather than a "Black Prince." Apparently the two are often confused for one another; the primary IDing factor seems to be the width of the rosette - "Prince" tends to spread out wider and a bit more prostrate, whereas "Knight" is apparently more narrow and reaches up taller. But you put me on the right track, so thanks for the input!

Oh, you're right, you're right. The majority of forms out there, I've read, are H. attenuata rather than H. fasciata, or so I understand. As I was writing I think I mentally switched the two. The attenuata, I think, has a rougher texture to it, rather than smooth, but I too have a hard time to discerning a difference.

And glad you IDed the Echeveria! I have one 'Black Prince'--very nice plant--and haven't gotten the opportunity to observe 'Black Knight' for myself.

My little Haworthia does seem to have a rougher texture to it. So attenuata it is, then. Or, at least, that's what I'm gonna go with. :)

I was all ready to go with "Black Prince" myself - they definitely look similar enough to get the two confused.

The one in the 4th photo looks identical to my Graptoveria 'Bella'! The second to last picture of the leaflings looks like sedum morganianum to me. I have one and I would know thos little leaves anywhere! I'm very jealous of the variegated crassula! It's beautiful!

I have a Crassula perforata variegata and identifying it was confusing. It's an interesting plant and does well in its pot.

Erin: I can see where the "Black Knight" would look like a G. "Bella." The coloring on mine, though, is definitely dark. Something about the lighting in that photo makes it look a lot lighter than it actually is. As to the Sedum morganianum, I do think I wanna say that the owner did refer to it as "Burro's Tail," which I'm finding through Google to be your S. morganianum. So we may have an ID here! :)

Penny: I was having a hard time IDing my C. perforata, too. I have the variegated one, and a non-variegated, neither of which came with labels. You're right, it's a very interesting plant, and I'm hoping they both grow nice and big and spill out all over the place. :)
