I am seeing many NC people on Cottage Garden Forum. Would you please speak up and tell us what part of NC you are in.

I see roses. Lots of roses. If it was for me I would widen the sidewalk; plant cottage style flowerbeds up near the house and leave the lawn for down by the sidewalk. Things like Garden Phlox, Shasta Daisies, Crocosmia, Hydrangea... I also like a 'Hollywood' Juniper or two at the corners up near the house but they do better out on the coast. I'm not sure how well they would do in W-S. I like Crape-myrtle's but I would only do one if it is a large one. To me the purple ones bloom for the shortest period the pink ones bloom longer and there is one white one that will bloom very late around here. New ones get developed every year so cultivar names are unimportant. Another cool look for that house color would be one of the purple leaved Mimosa's (I know, a mimosa! shame on me but I like them). Since I garden in the deep shade when I see full sun exposure I want to fill it with perennials and annuals that bloom all summer, others may want a shade tree.

Tammy, I did the tropical paradise theme. Yes I'm beyond burned out. Can't wait til It's all over. My plot is the middle one of the tropical gardens. I think it's #22. Plantbug, I was going to use a large 'Sum and Substance' in the garden but decided not to, so no hostas.

there are 3 gardens of each theme (9 themes). there's always a veggie garden area (1 theme), an herb garden, one section for high school kids, usually a spooky type theme- up on the hill this yr and if you missed it, you missed out- and then a few others, normally one or 2 funny or novelty. we don't think up the themes, they give us a list, we ask for 3 we might want to work on, and are assigned a plot. i don't recall anyone with an avocado, but you might have seen nasima's guava. i thought it might be one, too, and asked. she had the middle salsa garden which took 1st place. as a contestant, i can tell you we are all soooo glad it's all done for another yr. we had tear out today. sad to work so hard to get and keep everything so perfect, and then rip it out in a day. all together, it's more work than most people can fathom. it IS fun, mostly, though. it's a great way to learn and meet some people with similar interests. i think john did a wonderful job this yr! the vision was his, for sure. i think we are all happy to have a change of directors this yr, and are looking forward to a great next one. zigzag, the n&o ran an article series on the gardens this yr, you should be able to search their site and find the whole set. there were lots of pix of certain gardens (mine wasn't one b/c i didn't want to deal with a reporter). i will try to post a link with some of the shots i took later this week. right now i'm just a bit fried. :) tammy Here is a link that might be useful: last of news & observer series

Starting a new cottage garden

Hi Daphnelady, I think you have chosen a good variety of plants and love the idea of mixing flowers,veggies and herbs in the same area...a true cottage garden! The only advise I would say would be to try to make sure that you aren't hiding shorter plants behind taller one such as the hollyhocks. Tall, med, short/border plants..also if you can repeat a color or flower here and there as you go down the the border, by repeating a few of the colors it will help guide your eye down the border and bring unity to the bed especially such a long bed. Another tip that can be a little tricky is to arrange your plants so that you have something continualy blooming along the border so you don't end up with gaps. Look out for the lemon balm! Here where I live it really can take over...it is in the mint family I believe. I tried killing mine that I had in a large pot, the thing wouldn't die, had to pull it out and throw it away to finally rid myself of it. Yes, do take before and after pics...I wish I took more myself. Then you can post them here for all to see and be inspired! nckvilledudes.......I've seen you post on the Clematis Forum. I have a few (The President), but are lousy performers (I think). Is there a "trick" for first flush for class III. I feel like I'm missing something.

Locals around Chapel Hill -- there's a great folk art show at Fearrington this weekend. I was out there yesterday interviewing a few artists and I love some of the garden art (reasonable prices).

The ticket price of $5 goes to the Chatham food pantry.

I'm in Western NC not too far from Mr. Toad. There are two other GW people I know of in the area, and we've been visiting each other's gardens for several years now. It seems like most plant exchanges and GW get togethers occur in eastern NC..it could be nice if some people in the west got together also. Please email me if interested.

I hang out mostly on the rose forums but am not strictly a rose nut.

Sorry for the delay frogview. For our area, try the type III clematis including any of the viticellas. The President is a type II and they don't tend to do as well in our climate as the type IIIs. The type IIs can brown out horribly in our heat and humidity. The viticellas and the US native clematis do wonderfully well for me although a few of the US native can get mildew.

Our NC tourism website has just added a "Gardens & Arboretums" section. You may recognize some of the stories are by yours truly.

On the Itineraries page, there is a 3 day itinerary, "Love Our Triangle of Gardens" for visiting the gardens in the Triangle area. Soon, there will be an itinerary for the Mountains and the Coast. Those are free downloads.

This is how I spend my time when I'm not gardening or blogging.

North Carolina... I REALLY want to move to the high country there and have an eco-cottage. I was in blowing rock and boone last summer and didn't want to leave, as it is said that "getting to the high country is easy but leaving is not". I discovered that place by looking on The American Horticulture Society's heat zone map. When I saw that there was a very cool-summered place in the south, I was like-- I've gotta get there! Lilacs and old roses galore!!!

I know that was totally off-topic, but I just wanted to say that anyone who has the privilege of living there is VERY lucky! I had never seen so many different flowers in my life!!! A horticultural jewel indeed.

Winston-Salem, almost into Wallburg. K'ville is very close. I'm new to this forum. I started out on plant exchange, then got into winter sowing. This was my first year to ws. But I love cottage flowers, so I've been reading this one for a while now.
