Trying to get a cactus ID from a description.

I saw a rather interesting cactus at a store today; however it felt a bit soft and it had recently been watered, which sent up red flags about potential rot so I didn't want to buy it there, and it was a small and busy enough building that I couldn't really take a picture without drawing a lot of unwanted attention. So...

Shape: Globose and sort of flat-ish, although that doesn't necessarily reflect on the adult shape, so... The body was nobbly. Sort of like a gymnocalycium. The nobs were rounded (Fairly round. Not that flattened or diamond-shaped or whatever) and about an inch across.

Areole positioning: The areoles were in the middle, raised part of the nobs, and not in the gaps between. Also the nobs seemed to actually grow around the older areoles so that you could only see the spines and not the white, fuzzy part.

Spines: Look sort of like this: http://cactiguide.com/graphics/c_reduncispina_600.jpg . Thick, white, matte, and very solid. New spines had sort of a reddish tinge to them.

Color: Light, pastel-ish green. Vaguely bluish though I wouldn't say glaucus.

This is difficult ...

I am not sure of what you mean with "nobs", but it sounds as if it is the tubercles, so I'll assume that.

What was the size of the plant? If the tubercles are 1 inch across it must be a big one.

Single or offsetting?

Were the tubercles arranged in a spiralling pattern or in vertical straight lines?

Was it glossy, matt or something in between?

Thanks baldric. Now I know what kind of cactus I have. I should have picked up a few more of the other varieties they had for $2.00. The vendor said he had too many and wanted to get rid of them. I have to overwinter them indoors and my space is limited otherwise I would've picked up the whole lot.

Okay! Thanks for your input. I just couldn't find one that looked close enough to this species so I just wanted to make sure. And actually this picture was after I cut off the bad parts.The stem was pretty much broken off so I just cut off the gross gooey parts. The rotted parts were turning black and have some white fuzz (mold?) on it. I was too grossed out to remember to take a picture xD Do you think it's too small to make it? My friend was about to throw it out and I wanted to try and save it :o

Amazing! You all are such a treasure of information! Thank you! desertsteph- I DID see that floor on the cork floor thread & tried unsucessfully to find another picture. That one is rather dark. Their "planks" are placed a little close together, but that IS the look I'm seeking. Cork gets rave reviews from many, but if it fades, the contrast is lost. umm---more to think about. sombreuil mongrel- Mixed-media! Perfect term! I had NO IDEA about the subfloor requirements! Thank you! (It's encouraging to know that at least you've seen some "best ones"!) barthelemy- ooouuu! BEAU-TI-FUL! Another big thank you! I think all tile might be the best option. idrive65- You found the pic I've searched a month for! What a resource! That one looks like it's done in the basketweave pattern that sombreuil mongrel mentioned. It will be a big room, so there's lots of cleaning to consider. live_wire_oak- Another great post! I've only shopped one flooring store with my hair-brained idea, but the rep appeared very casual about the installation. This remodel is enough of a PIMA, I don't need more grief with a difficult installation & cruddy caulk! Thank you! So much to ponder! Thanks again!

Trying to ID this apple from my orchard

Definitely not a winesap, I am obsessed w that apple and can ID it easily and it is also one of if not the latest, ripening apple out there. They are usually avail the 1st week of Nov. and also have a flattened top-bottom. I've had them when I lived in Chicago and since then order online, yea I LOVE Winesap apples LOL. I was going to say Arkansas Black Spur too. Many, many years ago when I lived in Chicago I got a catalog from a rare heritage fruit tree grower. Ever since then I am ALWAYS on the look out for certain fruits & trees (thou 99% don't grow in Zone 9B) I believe the grower was in AR. I just searched online and can't find the place :-/ Check apple charts for the look then ripening dates, that is mostly set in the genetic stonework of plants. Weather can alter ripening/fruiting dates a small amount but not significantly. ~ liz

Take a picture. I do it all the time, if anyone asks just say you are sending the pic to the house cause you think you have this in your collection. Or some such story.

Good thinking beachplant!

I've done that with a couch and just said I was sending it to hubby to see if he wanted it.. wasnt a lie.. we bought it.LOL!

but in the case of the plant.. would work..:)

Just say you are sending to someone to see if you should buy it.

Yeah, tubercles.

Not that big. Maybe four inches across. Five, maybe?

Single.

Spiraling.

"Was it glossy, matt or something in between?"

It looked fairly matte.

Just take the damn picture. Why say anything? Is it now illegal to take pictures of cacti? Who is going to care at all? Are the picture police watching every move you make? SHEEESH!

Some stores really freak out if you take pictures of their merchandise.

That and my phone wasn't charged so I couldn't really have gotten a picture if I wanted to.

Also the store's like an hour away from where I am right now.

dav4.. we never said amccour had to run around and make excuses.. Only trying to help if asked.

amccour, I understand what you are saying. If your not comfortable, than dont. Hour.. yuck. ya, not really worth the gas right now.

by the way.. some phones have features that you can turn off the shutter noise and it will look like you just using your phone.. with no noise who knows.. he he...

not to mention accidents happen. I have tons of pics of the inside of my purse, and hubby has taken plenty of the jeep door from seat belt hitting the phone. ROFL!

hint.. if your ever there again. :)

whatever you decide.. Good luck and maybe someone here can narrow it down from descriptions.
