Tell me more about this. Do you think I would enjoy this group, I feel the lessons may be too long for me. I don't want to go into neighborhoods where I don't belong and not wanted. I do want to learn. My boss at the Huntington said it would be a waste of time for me. I have met quiet a few of these people who got their diploma from this group. It is very time consuming, and I have already volunteered 20 years as a volunteer. Any input will be welcome. Norma

Norma, you already know so much; it would just be earning a piece of paper for you to file away or hang on the wall. You already volunteer, are involved in the community, have resources and know lots of knowledgeable people. You probably would learn some things you don't already know and reinforce some things you do. There is a LOT of reading which I found to be a struggle to get through; a test each week which is open-book. Our classes were once a week from 9:00 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. which can be a long time to sit. Take a cushion! And don't let me discourage you.

It was good for me because I knew nothing and it opened a whole new world of plants and people for me. This forum and all the generous people is where I continue to learn.

Once you complete the classes, you are required to do the volunteer hours determined by the extension office. I don't regret for a minute that I took the class.

So get some more feed back and decided for yourself if you think it might be worth it.

Bev I have been discouraged to take these classes, that they would be boring for me, learning isn't boring, I don't think I can sit the 5 hours. I don't want to go to the area that they will send me to volunteer. I have limited mobility. I took some classes years ago regarding soil, drainage, making a moss basket, none of the information did I ever use. I was disappointed and dropped out. I think perhaps I can learn from the books that I read cover to cover, and at my age it is getting harder and harder for me to remember. I have a feeling that it's not for me. 1 hour classes I would love. Norma

I start the majority of my spring crops from seed in a small green house, in Middleburg, FL. It is just 25 miles south of Jacksonville. Copenhagen Market cabbage does well. Green Goliath broccoli does well, extremely large heads. This year I tried some Snowball cauliflower in mid December but the 10 days or so of freezing days, 18F to 25F degree at day break froze most of them but 2. I thought that cauliflower was a pretty hardy clod weather plant but does not hold up like the cabbage and broccoli. I started the seeds on 1/16/10 and they should be ready to transplant around the end of February.

Think my first order of business would be to deal with the tree planted against the house. Do you know what it is and if it's something worth saving for somewhere else in the yard? It's amazing how tenacious tree roots can be - and if it would make more sense for this specimen to simply be gone - you can dig down and around and oftentimes a shovel, used as a lever, can rock the roots loose to the point where they can be sawn or lopped off. Much easier to tackle this before the tree gets into full leaf. I like the idea of a wider sweep of planting bed as suggested above. And keep the slate; it serves a purpose until you decide if something different is in order - and edges can always be softened with low growing plant material. If getting rid of the lone pines in the front yard isn't an option, they could benefit from having "friends" to make them groupings of three for starters. The pyramid evergreen shape is already there, so globular or more boxy, at least irregular or maybe even a weeper, in shape would give points of interest from both the curb and your windows. I'm in zone 4, and there is a good range of material available. A good local nursery or a spin through the U of Ill. Extension Service websites can get you started. I'm dealing with large spaces so any or all of this may be out of the question for you (nothing unusual or "outside the box" here, they just do well in zone 4), but I make good use of Spruce, Junipers, Ninebarks, Alpine Currant, crab apple, lilacs, northern developed azaleas, Anthony Waterer spirea, flowering almond, viburnum, mock orange, daylilies, peonies, tall bearded iris, Siberian iris, ferns, dianthus, hostas, nepeta, Veronica, sedums. And I've rediscovered the benefits of using annuals here and there - no large investment, an easy way to play around with textures, shapes and colors without the committment of perennial plantings. P.S. Resist any temptation to plant a flower ring around your mailbox. :-)

LOL!! While I think apprenticing is an excellent plan ( and I mentioned that myself), it is pretty important to assess the quality of the individual or firm you wish to apprentice with. Since there is really no qualifying or certifying body for landscape designers, skill levels and design aesthetic can vary widely. And since most of the general public has no way of assessing these skills themselves either, popularity of a particular individual or firm is no guarantee of quality work!! FWIW, there are basic design principals which can and should be taught to anyone entering this field. That's why there are degree programs in this field and scores of textbooks outlining these principles. Not the easiest of concepts to learn on the job with a harried designer/foreperson trying to get a project completed. And while no client has ever asked me what my educational background was, I have never, ever regretted getting formal design training. Like getting a fine arts degree, learning how to develop aesthetically is just as important - if not more so - than learning the technical functions. I'd also argue that in no way is horticulture anti-design. Rather, there are a whole lot of designers/landscapers that have not a clue about horticulture and their designs scream it in bizarre and inappropriate plant selection, placement and installation. The key to being a good designer is melding the proper combination of aesthetics, horticulture and technical implementation.

Moni, Don't sell yourself short. You have a huge wealth of gardening knowledge to share. I didn't know you had let your MG certification lapse and look forward to you sharing your renewed knowledge with us when you take the course again. Down in Texas, they are trying to diversify the MG knowledge by offering some Earth Kind MG courses (in addition to the regular MG classes that are more chemically-oriented) that focus less on chemicals. I wish that concept would spread nationwide. Like some of the rest of you, I don't care much for lawns either. They give us very little (pretty much nothing, except they cover the ground and reduce erosion) in return for all the inputs and maintenance they require. I'd rather not have a monoculture of grass when it is better for all the wild creatures to have a mixed culture of many grasses, forbs and legumes. If I'm going to put time and effort into something, it is going to be the non-grassy parts of the landscape. I don't "do" lawns. If Tim didn't regularly mow ours, I'd let it die and replace it with something else. Dawn

Norma, the classes are long. I've never done it, I can't get off for the classes. And, uh, well, I'm not really impressed with a lot of the master gardeners I know. It may be too generalized. Learning is never boring if you are learning, listening to lectures for hours and reading the same things already learned is boring to me.

I agree, you should *teach* MG classes, not take them. Also, I know you - you'd not put up with the , uh, organic fertilizer that is involved!
