Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus?

I bought 4 tiny pots from Lowes about 3 Christmas ago and put them in this pot. They were very tight and now in full bloom. The purple color is not so much ready but white, peach and pink are ready.

Please tell me this TC or CC?

I don't go outside as much in cold weather, but yesterday I went to check on it, wow, they were drooping, so I brought it inside and these pictures taten this morning.

Those are Thanksgiving Cacti. Below is a photo of TC leaves versus CC leaves (this is not my photo, I found it online). On the left are TC leaves, on the right, are CC leaves. Hope this helps!

Thank you Planto, if they are TC, then it is too late for them to bloom? Thanksgiving is long gone.

Rhizo & Toni , it was interesting to hear your opinions on this. The last 3 years I have grown my Schlumbergeras ( Thanksgiving Cacti and Christmas Cacti ) "as you grow house plants" rather than "as you grow cacti". So I have potted them up every year and also fertilized in summer ! This has resulted in a lot of growth and also a lot of flowers. Because I read "here and there" that these plants are supposed to be "potbound" , I'm sort of waiting for things to go wrong , because of the way I grow them ... What I can say for sure is that potting up has not reduced flowering ! New plants Fall -05 bloomed again for Easter -06 after beeing potted up in February. A 2 1/2 years old Christmas Cactus ( from single segment cuttings Summer -04 ) potted up in July -06 are now full of flower buds. I had not expected any flowers at all since I potted it up so late ( had first decided not to , because of this "potbound-thing" but changed my mind because the plant had grown so much ). Now the "all-over-effect" / the "general health" of the plant in the long run , when growing them "more intensivly" , that I can not be sure of ... So far it looks good , but it would be interesting to hear more about what you all think about this. To me this is THE QUESTION , when it comes to Schlumbergera !

Hi all, thanks for looking and your comments.. I just moved my plant from my friends house to mine so I will let you know if the buds I have fall off...I remember a aunt, she use to keep her plant outside all summer and then in fall put it in her cellar and bring it upstairs when the buds were set..and my dad used to push his plant against a cold window in late fall and winter to set the buds and he would turn it to get buds all around the plant..everyone has there way...and all get flowers..very neat...thanks pirate-girl for the tip on letting the plant rest for a month and then feeding it..I've been wondering how long to let it rest....thanks to all again...linda

I'm no expert, that's for sure lol but here is what I've read .. Thanksgiving cactus - the segments have points at the tips of the segments Christmas cactus - segments have smooth edges Easter cactus - has bristles on the sides of segments and at the tip of the terminal segments Water lightly and put them in a cool spot with bright light, but not full sun. If the leaves start looking yellow, the light is too strong. The Easter cactus has a resting period from October until February. During that time it prefers a cool place, around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. During this time the soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Fertilize when blooming stops. When buds begin to set in stop feeding the plant and reduce watering. If they are kept indoors, filter the light and keep them in a cool location. As soon as the danger of frost is past it can be taken outdoors for the summer. Normally I hang it in a tree where it will get plenty of shade. If the pot is left on the ground, slugs can be a problem. While outdoors I keep them evenly moist and fertilize about once a month. Though the plant is hardy to 28 degrees Fahrenheit, I bring it indoors before autumn frosts. Hope this helps!

You can grow thanksgiving cactus as well as you do desert rose plants. Beautiful plants.

I am by no means an expert on holiday cacti, but I don't believe it's too late (with that said, I'm hoping someone else with more knowledge on this question will chime in).

If I'm not mistaken, my MIL's bloomed later than Thanksgiving last year and I think she has one right now that's forming buds (they haven't opened yet).

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that most of the common cultivars were selected hybrids, selected for flowering traits, not natural plants. So do the terms TC and CC mean all that much for these plants, other than they flower heavily and easily during the short days?

Hmm, that would make sense as to why my MILs TC has buds on it right now. I don't have any experience with making them re-bloom.

TC and CC will bloom for quite a long window of time.

TC tend to bloom sooner, which is why they're marketed incorrectly as Christmas Cactus....
they have blooms before Christmas, and they sell better when in bloom. Christmas Cactus tends
to bloom just a bit later, right about Christmas.

TC is Schlumbergera truncata.

CC is Schlumbergera x buckleyi, an old hybrid.

Thanksgiving cactus- the pointy leaf edges are the tell. Bloom depends on hours of darkness, which can be artificially controlled. Growers do this with poinsettias too.
