Comments (29)I find that home grown fruit taste different than store bought. Some things taste better when allowed to fully ripen on the tree and others just have more character or a different range of flavor than store bought - so don't completely base your tree purchase on how store bought fruit tastes. Many people consider Calamondin's inedible but if you have one potted on your porch you will find yourself enjoying them even though they are harshly sour. I also shove my potted citrus collection into a small greenhouse for the winter (zone 7b) and they handle it ok if I give everyone a haircut before moving them in. The biggest problem is aphids and other bugs which show up about now, when the temps start to warm and the trees sprout new growth. You can get a nice amount of fruit from a small well grown tree. One that you can easily move in and out of the greenhouse. But if you want to take it up a notch you'll want bigger pots and a bigger greenhouse. Kumquats can stay pretty small, mine is tiny after many years and is usually weighted down with fruit. The good thing about Kumquats and Calamondins is that they have ripe fruit throughout most of the year. If you can find one of the super dark figs like Petit Negri they will love the same treatment as your citrus. They have the best tasting fruit but not a ton of it and the bushes stay very small. Most other figs outperform them but the flavor isn't the same. I have no problems growing Meyer Lemon trees but most of them don't have a lemony flavor to me - I can taste the Tangerine in their heritage, and I prefer the full flavor of regular lemons. The reason a lot of people don't jump all over grapefruit is that they take daily medications that interact with chemicals in grapefruit juice. It is one of my favorite flavors but I can't eat them anymore - waaaaaa...See MoreCostco citrus!
Comments (81)I've checked 5 costcos in in the last week (SD County), all trees are Franz nursery. Lots of lemons and limes, most oranges are Owari satuma or Clementine, dwarf and regular found but not both at the same store, with the odd washington navel, one tango didn't look so good. Only one out of four costcos had any grapefruit, star ruby and oroblanco I think (palamar airport) and some budda hand (escondido). I think I saw a Minneola Tangelo in one store. Several Calamondin and Mandarinquat in several stores. I grabbed an owari satsuma on unknown with a lot of young growth as I had no orange trees yet, haven't planted in ground yet, likes my cheap greenhouse enough to bud out in the week I've had it. I think the old pictures of W&N trees look a lot nicer for a cheaper tree, as the price was $21 before tax, but I still think what I got was worth the price. Was hoping for a Tarocco blood orange this year, but Franz has none assuming this is accurate (http://www.frantznursery.com/pdf/Frantz-Availability.pdf), and would explain why I haven't found any blood oranges. Then again, there's this page which has blood oranges (http://www.frantznursery.com/products/citrus/) so might be later this year or supply problems...See MoreRed Valencia
Comments (19)Tarocco is my favorite when it is at its prime. Some of the earlier Taroccos were as large as the smiths. I haven't (yet) let the moros stay on the trees long enough so maybe next year. (they were all used for bloody screwdrivers at a planning meeting in February) : - ) This is the first year for the smiths... so if they improve a bit, they will be amazing. I could be led to say that the smiths tasted most like a regular orange, but certainly more complex than a Valencia. The Sanguinellis took the longest to get to a good sugar level in my location. They have developed a nice berry flavor like the moros.. but also are much later. Bottom line - all of these taste good, and taste better than what I can find in the market. I think the key is to let them hang on the tree so that they can build the sugars... to where you like it. So...... next year I will need to actually USE the brix meter that I have - that would be good spreadsheet info and backup the taste buds. - George...See Moregreenman28 NorCal 7b/8a
