Anyone tried this fence method for deer proof?

Hi,

My in-laws asked me to re-landscape their yard last weekend. They live in the very nice water front property, but they have deer problems.

Since I would like to re-build vegetable garden for my mother-in-law, I've been looking for solutions for deer-resistant, but not too tall fence option (not to disturb their view). I'll also try to plant vegetables deer don't like, too.

I came across the following site. It looks like a simple, but effective solution. Have anyone tried this??

I might tweak this idea a bit for nicer looking & more easy-open/close result, but I LOVE to hear if this works before I start the project.

I've not used it, but I like it. If you spray paint the fencing black (not green), it will 'disappear' into the landscaping and not be as noticable. Black is a non-color and is truly best for disguising things like that.

It would work fine for lettuces and other veggies that don't grow very tall, but I have tomato plants that are 6' tall, corn that is 8' tall, and okra that is 4' tall. Don't see how this would work for those.

My project is to protect a vegetable garden from deer and rabbits. A couple of years ago I did this combination of light weight netting and some electric wires. it didn'[t work that well as it was only 7', patched together and often I forgot to keep it turned on.. This year I've had another enthusiasm so have tried a fence used by a co-worker. His consists of three low wires, electirifed, 6" apart. Has a big vegetable garden (10 children so as he put it he can't share produce with crritters). So i did almost the same except having most of the posts from the old fence I added a fourth wire nose high. It worked at first but this morning they got to my wife's sun flowers and a bit of the green beans. I was really annoyed as I put a lot of time into that fence. Well turns out the fence was all but dead. You could touch it and nothing. I had been meaning to string trim the weeds but the trimmer refused to keep working. Bought a new one and voila after trimming the voltage on the fence is now over 500 volts (500 is the limit on my meter). That's even higher than when I first put the fence up. I didn't do that thorough job in trimming. Plus I didn't realize that a few weeds would foul up the fence. Another factor besides the weeds touching the fence was expansion from the heat so in a couple of place the low wire was near or touching the ground. I need to keep a watch on that maybe figure out a spring in the system to keep up with the change in length from temp changes.

I have had a different experience. I live in the woods and I have a neighbor that feeds the ever-multiplying deer too, but that device called Scarecrow did work for us. Its not the same name, but its motion activated and hooked up to a hose to shoot water and make a hissing noise. They really didn't like the noise, they jumped if someone activated it even if they were an acre away. Sometimes they would still get the hostas that were out of reach of it, but only super rarely. But they didn't go near it to get the daylilies all around it. My backyard (where the Scarecrow was) is fenced with a 4 foot chainlink (they can easily jump it) and now I don't use the scarcrow at all because I got a large dog. (Dogs give you their own problems, but the deer don't even come inside the chainlink at night when the dog is never out to get the hostas anymore.)

Hi dk, Yes, the grey net fencing works well for me. I, too, have many (65 to be exact) new shrubs and trees and I like deer. However, the deer do not write out the checks for the new plants nor do they get a back ache from planting them. Rather than draping the netting, I tied it to stakes and arbors with garden twine that I had in the garage. This way no leaves or branches are touched and by encircling the plants, the netting actually went farther. Also, just before the snow, I really saturated everything with Deer Off which lasts for several months. Any day the temp reaches 40 degrees, Deer Off or the newer version, Deer Away,(smaller chile and garlic sediment and no clogging) can be sprayed. A neighbor about 5 acres away is now feeding the neighborhood deer 50 pounds of deer food per night, so I have no guilt and no nibbled shrubs. My deer hate blueberry bushes...at least the leaves and branches. I only have a few deer and they don't seem that interested in anything, but hybrid tea roses, so far. Just to be on the safe side, I put blueberry bushes, butterfly bushes and lilacs on the back of my fairy garden (facing the yard) and so far....no eating the roses. The fairy garden is against one side of the house, with a grass path through the middle, so the back of the garden faces the side yard. The deer seem more interested in tasting a few things in the kitchen garden, which is further from the house. The John Cabot roses and Snow Pavement rugosa roses haven't been of much interest. They tried a little of the Therese Bugnet roses, but didn't come back for seconds. They even tried one butterfly bush and ate the top off one tomato plant (probably the younger deer) but didn't like that either. You can always tell, when they spit it out and don't come back. LOL For now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed this continues to work. In my favor, we only have a few deer, they are NOT hungry, and they have entire fields and pastures to play in and eat...they only come up because they're curious.

Rhizo - What a great idea to paint the fence in black color! I was also thinking about using copper pipe to make like a green house frame in dome shape, then cover w/black bird/deer-net...

Spazzycat - what kind of deer-proof method do you use for your tomatoes? My mother-in-law actually has a couple of artichoke which is 4' tall, deer seems not bother them.

Maybe I can plant them all around the tomato bed to somehow discourage deer???

We have 7' deer netting around the veggie garden supported by metal stakes. It's left in place all year round. It seems to work around this smaller area. We also have a deer fence around our 3.5 acres, but the deer keep on busting through it, so it's not always a trustworthy method of protecting plants.

One year for a fall garden, we tried using row cover material supported by PVC hoops in a similar way to the wire covering you show because all we had to protect was lettuce and collards. Wouldn't you know that the deer actually pawed through (hoofed through) the row cover to get to the lettuce.

Me and the deer are going to have a throwdown soon.

I use two strands of electric fence with lots of flagging tape tied on. I also spray around the garden with a repellent called "Liquid Fence" every week or two. This has kept the deer out of my sweet potatoes, beans and corn for several years.

Some deer around here take off our fence we have around some trees with their antlers so secure it well.

Our deer love our tomatoes and what they don't take one bite of they knock off the bushes. This year my husband put up a 5' wire fence around and area we dug. The bed is about 4-5'square. The tomatoes were planted fairly close together and are now quite dense and LOADED. The deer ate the branches that poked out the wire, but that was OK. It is small enough to keep them from jumping in, hopefully. So far, so good. To keep out the frost, we cover the "cage" with tarps and bungee them down against the wind.--hdr

Hi.........i live on the Texas coast and we are actually able to plant Orchids and such directly into the soil (sand) and they GROW ! Problem is the deer. Is there a small compact type of wire basket that could be attached to the ground to protect the leaves ??? Thanx so much

Some place on the web I read, from several sources, that anchoring heavy fencing on the ground around the garden kept deer out. They said deer don't like the feel on their feet because they are afraid of getting their foot caught. Think about it.
