Sick and tired of deer eating all of the veggies I have worked hard to plant, I am currently experimenting with a few things. I have found the following to be successful: --LiquidFence works, but you have to spray every other day, contrary to the label recommendations. --Expensive cologne/perfume misted lightly over the outer stems also works if you spray every day, but in addition to being expensive, you must mist every day. --I have devised a diabolic concoction that will repel deer and every other form of grazing wildlife, but you must use it only on the leaves and stems of the plant (NOT ON THE FRUIT!!!) Here's the recipe: In a blender, liquefy the following: 2-3 cups water 5-6 fresh Habanero peppers (hottest peppers known to man) 9-10 fresh garlic cloves 1-2 Tbsp vinegar 1 Half cup fish sauce (available at Asian markets - smells horrific!!) After liquefying all ingredients, strain out all pulp from the peppers and garlic, and pour into a spray bottle. Bingo!! Use gloves when spraying on plants -- this mixture is vile, and will cause extreme pain if accidently rubbed into the eyes or mouth. It's nasty stuff, but is guaranteed 100% effective. Application every 3-4 days (or longer) should be sufficient.

None of the deer in my area are afraid of people, but they usually ignore people and go about their business. If you shoo them, they will walk away for a small distance. I suspect that this buck is someone's bottle baby because even the very tame deer don't normally want to be handled and will keep a distance, even though it is a small distance. I know that he is dangerous and I'll stay away from him. The mule deer must not be as wacko as the white tails, because I am surrounded by bucks every day of the year and I've never seen any crazy behavior, except I did one time see a couple of very large bucks clash antlers a couple of times, in a sort of bored manner. tcstoehr, I have a 6 ft tall chain link fence around my own house that has kept the deer out for 16 years. They hang out by the gate, hoping someone will leave the gate open so they can stroll in. I just helped my son put game fence around his plants. It's 6 1/2 feet tall, and so far, so good. When the berry field is finished, it will have 8 ft of protection: 6 1/2 ft of game fence, 5 ft of chicken wire at the bottom for the rabbits, and the top of the fence and across the top of the patch, enclosed in bird netting. I see the deer inside 5 ft fencing, eating dinner with the local horses. I suspect that they are jumping over the gates, which are sometimes lower. But they can and will definitely jump a 5 ft fence.

Hello all, I know a family that raises white tail deer for agencies that reintroduce deer where deer use to live but populations have declined or absent all together. Its a 50 acre deer farm. It has 4 sections with internal and external fenced roads running in between each none are accessible by the public. It started when a baby doe's mother was killed by a car and the baby doe was brought to the farm where the owner was ask to keep it a few days but no-one showed back up up to retrieve the baby deer and the family had been bottle feeding the baby deer and it was very healthy and they had fallen in love with the baby deer in-which the family petitioned the local gov for the proper paperwork and permits to keep the baby doe. They were granted the paperwork. Three years went by and she got pregnant. They did not try to jump out (6ft fence) but no one knew how the dad buck got in or out. Then the next year she was pregnant again in her forth year. So it came to be a problem that these new babies grew up and mated, So the owner went to find out if he could buy some deer elsewhere to introduce in his now growing heard of deer and was granted a permit to move some buck he bought from northern VA and they were added to the herd, that night those deer all ended up in his front yard (about 40), the northern deer showed the southern deer that they could jump the 6ft chain link fence, so with deer corn and apples and some 4 wheeler action all were lead back into the enclosure and the next day had a crew come in and added fence to 10ft and this keeps the deer in, none have jumped out. Now to keep them thinned down some go to be introduced in areas where needed. All deer are tagged when young and tranquilized for their shots and recorded. They do not jump the 10ft fence but one buck has made it in the enclosure and joined the herd and has not left or can not jump back out, no one knows where he got in or if someone put him in there but was found in good health untagged, unrecorded and may have actually been there before it was fenced in and/or is the original daddy buck that stayed hidden for years until recorded 7-8 years later when it was very old. Every year or so they buy some other deer from another farm to add to theirs so genetics do not go bad, they also have natural streams and ponds for water. Back to the Moral of the other topics. IMO you need a ten foot fence. I once worked on his farm for 5 years. For knowledge sake you cannot catch, keep deer legally without the proper permits/approvals and even then it took a long time to get approved for the farm ( just to keep them there) The land set aside for the deer are theirs until they are gone no building ect. and they have to be kept up/cared for by a professional vet for or from the local GOV that can legally tranquilize them, record them, move them, tag them, give then shots every year, take samples for testing, count the herd, basically keep track of each deer, all has to be done, documented, fees paid and are the only ones that can transport them or permit anyone else to. They are not for food ever nor to be hunted there and are safe. Do not think a deer can be a pet and approach them, the baby fawn was about a week or so old and was never around any other deer until it was 3yrs and even then sometimes played rough.

We see a few deer here and there but none seems to come into our urban gardens. The population seems to be small here. We seem to have enough water in our forested area here so no need to put water out for them. I really don't know too many people with tick bites unless they go out a little farther into the woods. Apparently ticks like tall vegetation grasses and leaves in the woods. We do have the Lyme disease carrying tick here. It is a Ixodes pacificus and Ixodes angustus, also known as western black-legged ticks. Things don't seem to have changed much according to what I've read. I feel for anyone who has this horrid disease to contend with. I live in Bog Central now and all I end up with is mosquito bites. Heat does seem to help to stop the itch but also it helps if I break a capsule of vitamin A and spread that on the bite. I don't get welts but I get extremely itchy skin for several days that I scratch when I'm sleeping. I use mosquito dunks in any standing water. Don't want to encourage the population. Although they don't really need me to water them since Bog land is the perfect place for them.
