Cottage Gardening philosophy?

Hi all,

About 4 months ago I bought a house with a fresh canvas for me to create a garden. I have made my landscape design, but now am trying to choose plants for the beds. I have been reading Gertrude Jekyll's "Colour Schemes for the Flower Garden", where she discuss seasonal flower beds, one for May, one for June, etc. I have other books about cottage gardening that stress that there should always be something blooming in a flower bed. I have thought about both of these concepts and cannot decide on a logical standpoint what makes the most sense.

What does everyone think? I'm all open for pro's and cons of these two scenarios. I would love feedback. It would help me toss and turn less at night about my garden!
