Pots or the Ground for Seedlings?

I put my daylily seeds in moist paper towels and put them into ziplock bags until they sprouted.

Once they sprouted, I planted them in 16 oz plastic cups with Jiffy seed starting soil and holes punched in the bottom of the cups for drainage.

They are now growing happily under florecent lights.

This spring, once the danger of frost is gone, they will be planted outside. They will grow outside for one year.

Next winter will be the first test, Spring 09 we will findout which seedlings are hardy in here in South Dakota zone 4.

If all goes well, the summer of '09 will be when the seedlings start to bloom, and fun will begin.

My question is, should I plant my seedlings in the ground, or into pots (1 gallon I assume) from this spring until next summer?

Is there an advantage to planting daylily seedlings into pots or the ground?

Does it make a difference here in zone 4 vs. some of the warmer zones?

If I plant the seedlings in pots, I will put a nice thick layer of mulch over the pots during next winter.

Sometimes I get concerned I may mess up a step, and accidently destroy some of the seedlings before they have a chance to bloom.
