Icing On the Cake and Palace Garden Beauty are very good cultivars that grow well and multiply well here. The blooms are gorgeous and always open well.

I can't wait till all those new irises bloom this year. Remember I ended up buying over 500 different named tall bearded iris last year before everything was said and done. I just hate being so darn addicted to flowers. At least I gamble on plants instead of the lottery or slots. LOL most of the time I have something blooming to show for my money.

YES on 'Mildred Mitchell' - it gives me loads of flowers no matter what & even on a "bad hair" day it's beautiful! That's the only one I have experience with.

Only thing i have to say is MILDRED MITCHELL here in the south south, ascension parish Louisiana to be exact, is very susceptible to rust. I don't know if that's an issue in your zone. But i had it in 05 and lost it at the begining of 07 because it was so weakend by the rust. It was one of a few new ones i had that didnt make it. And that doesnt mean anything, because i could have just had a really weak or bad plant to begin with although 05-06 it was in good condition. I keep records of that, i know thats strange but............

Mildred Mitchell is wonderful here in zone 6. It has increased very well for me, and I started with just a single fan a few years ago when the price was high. I have a very nice clump, which has been divided and moved once. I can't say enough about this plant. Here is a picture of my clump:

What a great picture Linda! I don't think I have ever had a problem with rust. I've seen foliage look pretty rough in late summer, but I don't think it is rust. I'm assuming I live in a zone that is cold enough to prevent it?

Thanks Nancy. Most likely we don't have to worry about Rust. Two people in my area had it the summer before last. It came in with some plants they bought from deep south growers. I had a chance to actually see it and touch it for myself. It did NOT come back the following summer. Our cold winter temperatures kill it.

Just wanted to mention that Rapid Eye Movement is on my Wish List too.

Thanks Ellie, I think it really has helped. Quite possibly the others not mentioned are great too, but I think I will stick with the ones everyone has mentioned here. Wish I knew how Rapid Eye Movement does Linda, it is different from any I have. I'm trying to stick to those that are not similar to those I have.

There are a few daylilies out there that resemble each other - at least in pictures - and I would be happy with any one of them this spring. They are:
Rapid Eye Movement
Tar And Feather
Indian Sky
Hold Your Horses
Indian Sky is the oldest of these and probably the least expensive. It is also not easy to find to buy. It is one of the parents of REM. REM is one of the parents of Hold Your Horses. The resemblence between them is easy to see.

Like you, Nancy, I want to buy only daylilies that are quite different than what I already have. I am room-challenged and really don't want to put another bed in this year, so I'm trying to make educated choices before buying.

I love light edges on my daylilies and have been looking at Borders On Pink, Party Pinafore, and Banned In Boston. I'm having a hard time deciding between these three as well as the golden-yellow with the purple eyes that we have been discussing. Anyone have opinions on these pinks with light edges?

Ellie, Tar and Feather & Indian Sky remind me a quite a bit of Wild Horses, which I got last fall, haven't seen it actually in bloom yet. Would Wild Horses be similar to Rapid Eye Movement? I probably don't have any business buying any more daylilies, just because I have several I received in trades last fall & purchased that I haven't seen bloom yet. I know from my little experience that plants don't look the same in person. Last year I had one called Jay bloom the first time, an old one from 1972. From the picture I had seen of it, it looked rather like any old red daylily. In person it is quite unusual I think, and I'm so glad I have it. I've since found better pictures of it, but still not as nice as in person. I sure hope it blooms as well this year & it wasn't a fluke! I really should wait til I see these new ones bloom, but I just don't think I can :)

Another question, Ellie. Of the ones I brought up, which do you think is your best performer? Your input here is of great help to both Nancy and me!

I agree Nancy. Sometimes you just gotta see them in person. I know I grow some daylilies that never look quite as good in pictures as they do in my yard. And a few that are just the opposite. They never quite live up to pictures that I have seen of them on the web.

Linda - I like the lighter pink edges too. I got Party Pinafore in the summer of 2006. I think it's beautiful, but it had a bit of spring sickness last spring and it's only increased by 1 fan. I read somewhere that PP needs a while to settle in, so I'm hoping this summer it will perform much better. Here's a photo from last summer:

Linda, just a suggestion from someone else in zone 6. When you see what people here have to say about plants, bear in mind where they garden, and use that info as context for their comments. Ellie has a fabulous garden, I'm sure of that without ever having seen it. But she's in Alabama, in zone 7; you are in a colder area. You'd be surprised what even one zone's difference can do....I'd asked a Kentucky grower about a plant once, and he suggested that I might not be very successful with it.

If you're looking for feedback on a potential buy, another thing to do is do a web search on the plant; see whether a fair number of places in your zone (even better, your geographic area) offer it for sale. And ask yourself (or the seller if necessary)....those plants, are they display plants (ie, quite possibly new to that garden), or does it appear that they've been for sale for multiple years? The latter suggests that they're hardy in that seller's zone.

By extension, it's wise to buy from sellers in your zone or area. With new or expensive plants, why not them test drive them first?

Now, do I take my own advice? Sometimes. :)))

Beautiful pictures, Juliet. Your Party Pinafore is so sweet and very soft looking. Banned In Boston also has a nice light edge. I know I would like it too.

Thanks for mentioning Border Crossing. I've just added that one to my ever-expanding Wish List.

I love light edges, even if the daylily is not pink. I have really enjoyed growing Geneva Firetruck, Pocket Change, and an older daylily called Ribonette. Every flower is perfect and has a nice, large light edge. I also have light edges on Key To My Heart, one of my favorites, and Avante Garde.
