Have I lost my mind LOL

I am so ready for spring to get here. We have continually had at least a foot of snow and ice on the ground since the first part of December. I just can't wait to get out and do some digging and planting. Today we are supposed to get up to the mid 40's which considering earlier this week we had -26 degree windchill temps during the day will be a heat wave. I am hoping that the next few days enough snow will melt so that I can at least toss some seeds out for spring. Somehow I got it in my head last night that I should plant some seeds, but forgot the 2 feet of snow LOL. We are expecting a new addition in August so I know that any planting that I want to do and garden additions will have to be early spring before I get too big too move in the heat.

I am excited, just sent in my papers so that I can take the Master Gardener classes starting in March. DH wondered what I was going to do with that, I told him that I will just have that neat little title. I can't wait to learn and to meet other gardeners even though I have to drive 60 miles one way 3 days a week for 2 weeks.

Really, thank you so much. So many great insights, and the best of all is to clean up the room, and live with it for a bit. My mind was stuck in the 'got to make a decision while the tape/plastic is up' track. It never occurred to me that I could remask--don't ask me why. My only excuse is I'm feeling overwhelmed. I recently moved to Germany, I don't speak the language yet, and the simplest tasks are difficult. The paint store is so foreign. There are about 20 pre-mixed colors (which look universally ugly), tons of white, and little bottles of concentrated color--you get to mix your own colors. I'm sure this is a delight to a real artist, but for those of us who flunked kindergarten art class--it's a challenge. Oh the things I've learned here (wish I would have known the primer trick on the first coat....) NHB room gave me hope that a vibrant yellow can work beautifully. I'll put up some pictures and see how I feel. I'll probably experiment to come up with a soft, universal color to eventually paint the whole house. Another amazing thing is their paint is not washable. It's more like a milk paint that washes off when scrubbed. As the owner of 3 dogs, I do wash walls, so they will be repainted one way or another. In the meantime, I'll investigate the possibility of glaze because I HATE edging so much that I was about to paint everything white. I so liked the fabric choices Les came up with, that I'm going to post my sofa and see if someone can work some magic there. You people are fabulous. I appreciate the help and all the honesty. I went to a gathering last week and met a number of people from the old Eastern Blok--all old enough to speak Russian and lament that the next generation was going to be divided; in the next breath, cursing the Motherland--gotta love those Slavs. I knew whom it was immediately from your greeting. I've spent the last several years helping take care of my father who had Alzheimer's--what a horrendous disease. I had no energy left to even think about any projects. But, it was all good. I have no regrets, I spent precious time with my family, and my father and I grew very close on a new level. I feel fortunate that I could spend that time with them. I have a feeling, I'll probably be asking for a lot of help. I have acquired a new look: a very contemporary house, I mostly brought things that I wouldn't regret losing, and they are more traditional in style. I guess we could call it modern rummage sale: nothing fits, most of it is a cast-off, and it all needs to be done on a budget. (We had the WORST, most expensive move possible--nightmares upon disaster). So, doesn't that seem like a good challenge for the decorating milieu? I'm glad to see you here and I'd love to see some pictures of what you've done to your place.

I don't care for any of the paint samples on the walls. They only highlight the pink tones in the paneling by being so gold or brown/gold. I also wouldn't do burgundy, as you have so much of it already in the room. I would first consider finding a color that is the same as the background color in the paneling - a soft creamy ivory tone, and just use that. The entry area feels kind of dark and closed, so a light color there would work. I would then take the same paint and paint all the ceilings, both in the entry and the living room. The white ceiling only works to make the walls look even more pinky-peach in contrast. By painting out the ceiling in the paneling background color, you will lessen that considerably. I would get a larger area rug for the entry, something with a creamy field and burgundy accents, which again will tie into the LR but keep the entry lighter in feel. I believe I see a cabinet of some kind in the entry area where the coats are? Be sure you have a lamp there for some warm lighting for the entry. I would take the four small flower pix on the paneled wall in the LR and hang them in the entry in a grouping. I would change out the mats to a neutral, to show off the flowers themselves - you don't even see them in the burgundy matting. The frames are fine. By bringing some of the burgundy onto that entry wall, you will introduce the burgundy color in the entry that will then lead the eye into the LR. I would take the larger piece in burgundy matting and use that over the fireplace - having two pieces of art on that fireplace wall that are matted in green kind of makes it feel like you were trying to match the art, but they are not hanging together so it feels disconnected. I would take all those balls out of the tall vases on the fireplace and puit them in a bowl somewhere - they are lost in those vases. Then find some tall, fountain-like grasses and greens to put in the vases for softness. It seems like you have so many great family photos. I would have them all framed in complimentary frames and use the large paneled sections behind the couch to hang them in a striking grouping. By using those instead of the burgundy matted collection, you will stop highlighting the color of the paneling, and instead will have a varied grouping of photos that will become the focal point. I would also move the photo screen and tuck it in a corner or near something so it doesn't feel like it is just floating in the room by itself. I love the little chest you have by the entry, but I don't like it there. It is heavy and dark, and feels like a barricade to the front door area. I would remove that and leave that entry open. Maybe you could move it over to the other side to where the little green bench is now? Try to get some pillows for the couches that are creamier in their background color, to lighten the feel of those pieces. They could still have a print or a stripe, but should have a lighter overall background that brings in the wall color. Something like this, tho this particular pillow may not be right, but the idea of a lighter background is the key. crewel pillows I don't see much ambient lighting in the room - at least in the views we have, only one lamp on an end table, and that is too small. Put that lamp on the little chest that I had you move over to the other side of the room. Get a bigger lamp for that table, perhaps another lamp to sit on the sewing machine (I think) that is behind the couch acting as a console table. More lighting located lower and that is warmer will also affect how the paneling is perceived, and will keep the eye more focused into the center of the room and away from the walls. I think your room has lots of wonderful things going for it. Settling the entry will help, and then tweaking the LR space and its accessories will make it all feel finished and cohesive.

When I first moved to this garden I visited a nearby (relatively speaking) hosta grower. He sells 1,200+ hosta cultivars so I selected 9 in order to stay within my budget (which was small). Liberty, Revolution, Minuteman and Patriot were among my selections. All have been outstanding performers in the 10 years since I planted them as have Gold Standard, Olive Bailey Langdon, Halcyon & Ice Age Trail.

Hi Stacie!

Having been to your home and knowing that you have the cutest little fairy village under your tree, herbs galore in your front yard, beautiful cottage flower beds along the side yard and a really nice big vegetable garden in your backyard....I have to ask, where you are going to expand to? Are you kicking the dog out of his space? LOL Seriously folks...Stacie has a green thumb and her gardens are full of interesting plants and things are blooming and growing everywhere! You'll make a wonderful Master Gardener, Stacie.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Are the girls excited yet or still wondering what all the hub-bub is about? I hope you have an easy pregnancy and a healthy birth. Good heavens you'll barely have time for canning this fall. Such a good thing that you got so much done last year!!

As much as I think it would be cool to be referred to as a "Master Gardener", I'm pretty sure it's about more than the title. Isn't there volunteer work involved? Personally, I could never become a Master Gardener if it involved anything more than being called one. I'm just a selfish jerk like that. LOL.

Oh I know that there is so much more to master gardener than the title. It was just that Dh and my mom were wondering what I would do with the classes. I am looking so forward to learning about plants, diseases, and insects. I answer a lot of questions about gardening already and would like to have more info to help people. Another thing is that I am planning to do some of my volunteering with local 4-H groups, I was involved with 4-H growing up and am looking forward to helping out such a great organization.

Thanks for all the complements. I do have lots of garden spaces but luckily I have lots of tough plants that don't need a lot of work. I am going to move the strawberries to the back yard to give them some more sun. I don't know how much canning I will get to do, at 4 months I am already showing so much and so big that I have to lean over my belly in the kitchen.

I am also beginning MG classes in March. Mine are twice a week through May. It's a tri-county class but, luckily, 11 of the 16 classes are fairly local. The community service requirement was a big draw for me. In our location, 50 hours of instruction and 60 hours of community service (annually on the community service) are required for maintaining certification. Our town is just now putting in and contructing Demo gardens. I can't wait to be involved in that :). I really love where I live and I am so looking forward to contibuting more to the community. The learning is icing on the cake.

Hi, congrats on all your news (especially the little sprout) I am a master gardener and I love it. I am also a master composter. Our class was once a week all day long for 14 weeks. then we do all the volunteer hours. answering the phones which terrified me as a newbie but now i really enjoy it. you get some hilarious questions! we have to do 20 hours to keep our master gardener name I guess. I have done some hours at our great earth home show and doing some more at another home show. we have a huge plant sale in april and then we help teach others at our huge community garden. it's alot of fun and I truly think you will enjoy it. I had no interest in bugs and weeds and now it's fun to be able to identify all of them! so have a great time. Tanya
