new aloes & new agave

Here are the aloes I purchased at the California Cactus Center over Thanksgiving. I also purchased a couple of unique pottery pieces (not pictured) not unlike the ones made by our own Caudex. And uh, that piece of pottery with the airplane is not one of them.

A closer look. These are (left to right, top to bottom) A. Krapohliana, A. Inermis, A. Peglrae and A. Longistyla (I may have the names switched around in this description but I do have the tags taped on the pots, so no worries).

My book on South African Aloes says that the Krapholiana and Longistyla are hard to grow out of their native habitat. We will see about that! The other 2 items in the box are an agave with a white stripe down the middle of the green frond, and a pad from a very pretty small opuntia in a greenish purple color. These 2 items were from a neighbor of my relatives in LA. Anybody got IDs?

Next is an agave obscura I picked up at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden. Pretty nice!

Finally, just because, this morning's sunrise in the Bay Area.

Love your sunrise! That is a nice batch of Aloes. The Agave is Agave americana var. medio-picta 'Alba' . Careful with watering the krapo. It turns to crappy mush in the spring. The Agave obscura is terrific. Are you going to put it in the ground?

Nice set of aloes you picked up there! And that agave is terrific...love the smooth leaves and the teeth!

Coincidentally, I picked up a couple of similar aloes today, as well (from Aridlands)...

I Thank you. Cameras and me have been friends for 52 years. Now I take my pictures to Iphoto and I balance the colors and exposure levels as I was taught to balance the colors when I printed my color prints back in the "old days". If the colors are balanced the Haze of atmosphere will be cleared up and colors POP. Today was cloudy and that makes the colors richer and forms have no hot spots. Cameras don't necessarily see right. I make the shot as I see it. I just wish my feet weren't so dirty, and my toes longer and more graceful. I guess there is alway Photo Shop

@Crenda: Thank you, it does seem to like life in the desert. I'd guess the plant is 7-8 years old. I have a couple smaller examples about 3 years younger. Try Agave nickelsiae, a larger, more robust version that can add as many as 20 new leaves per year. Equally beautiful Agave. @Becky: Lovely example of A. The main body is cedar. The bands are just Douglas Fir so I hit them with a torch to discourage insects. The inside has copper wood preservative. The pin is like a clamp. It's bent over on the top and bottom. It was remarkably solid when completely assembled. I think it would require a substantial amount of force to separate that joint.

Agree -- Agave stricta. Remember seeing one of those when I'd pop over to Howard's place for a visit. He had had it for over a decade, IIRC, then one winter it up and died.

Thamks for the agave ID. I gotta say that just walking around in the neighborhood in Pasadena, you see all kinds of cool C&S. People have large organ pipe cacti stands, giant jade plants...it blows your mind.
And I guess the aloe krapholiana is appropriately named if it turns to ...crap. But right now all them plants are in my garage and dry as a bone.
I believe the agave obscura will go in the big terra cotta pot in the picture. It is a small agave (2 x 2) and I think pot culture will suit it.
The airplane pot is the largest one of a set of 3 that nest. They are for staging as they have no drainage holes. My neighbor put them out for free. I took them, but have often thought of putting them back! Wouldn't that be funny! The yellow color is just not right to my eye.
