Thanks Martha - yes, I saw that, but they're talking about growing the rhizome on, not starting seed. Very clear that it doesn't like wet. I think I'll go back to the Exchange thread, and do a mea culpa. Hopefully the donor will see it!!

Nancy, I have never started agapanthus from seed, because they are a very common plant in my region and quite easy to find in pots in nurseries. However, I believe seeds must be easy to germinate, because agapanthus is just about the only flower that self seeds in my clay soil garden! I usually have to pluck quite a few out of the ground every year, because they pop up everywhere. So it should not be too difficult for you to start them from seed.

Anyway, do let me know around the September time frame and I can send you seeds from mine if you'd like. I have blue and also white and love them both dearly. I cannot offer seed at the moment because I didn't collect any this year due to the building works in the house.

Hey, Annette - Yeah, I read that, not really a help - I am worried about temps, soil, etc. Also, what the heck is a punnet!!?? It is a berry basket, and I have never tried to start ANYTHING in a berry basket. So, that having been said....Eduarda says that they start willy-nilly in her garden, from seed. I am going to put them into cactus mix, on the heated pad, and hope for the best!!!

Eduarda, if this works, I'd love some of the white!!!

I grew some from seed a few years ago. They took about two years, from seed, to bloom. I don't remember it being a challenge to germinate as I was a very new gardener at the time but it seems they did take a few weeks to sprout.

Hi Nancy

a punnet is what we here in Australia would call the little pots you buy seedlings in from the nursery. Smallish and oblong shaped, usually contains say half a dozen seedlings. Hope that helps.

Can't help with tips on growing from seed unfortunately - I have dozens of them in bloom at the moment and they grow like weeds here (in fact are considered weeds in some states) so like Eduarda, wouldn't go to the trouble of trying to grow them from seed as their rhizomes multiply so quickly.

Hi Nancy, yes, sandy soil is good - thrives on warmth and the heat. I have some around my plum trees that haven't flowered this year because the tree above them have bushed out after a good prune - thus too much shade to flower. So full sun, bad soil and neglect is the best recipe for them!

They are also good to plant on slopes to prevent erosion. They grow a mass of roots that keeps the soil in place. The slope also helps with the drainage. A tough plant in my climate and well worth growing for more reasons than the flowers.
