Monarda (aka bee balm) good and bad

Hi All,

I recently posted a photo of one of my mondarda plants(Gallery:"My July Blooms from 2007"), and a couple of you said you would be interested to try it in your own gardens. I've not seen much of this plant here in the cottage and thought I would start a thread about it.

I've had very good success with several varities of monarda, and will add more to my garden this spring. I love the vibrant colors and the unusual blossoms.

HOWEVER, monarda can be quite invasive in the south, so if you're thinking about getting this plant, be sure to do some research for your area. Even here in the north it can spread pretty quickly, but it's not difficult to pull out, you just have to keep an eye on it. Give it some room. Good air circulation will help keep the powdery mildew away, as well as not allowing it to get too dry! Some varieties such as 'Raspberry Wine', 'Marshall's Delight' and 'Colrain Red' are known for being more mildew resistant than some of the others.

Have you tried this plant in your garden? What was your experience?

Patti
