mike and toni, i need your help asap!!!

I checked on my Oro Blanco grapefruit trees today because I noticed a few buds on my Oro blanco grapefruit tree. I almost thought i was going to puke when I found these big white bugs(looks like cotton) with brown heads and tiny pincers!! The crappy part is that I was planning on dragging evrything in my plant room back out for the day tomorrow so I could drench them with the FE spray. I mixed 2 tablespoons with a 750ml spray bottle. I actually plucked off the bugs I could see but how long will it take for me to get these damn things off my plants for the winter??

Andrew..Is there any way you can take pictures of them so we can get an immediate diagnosis?

I will tell you, Rhizzo is the expert in this department, identifying insects and helping to rid them..

I have a feeling that what you are describing is Mealie bug...They were horrible this year on many people's plants because of the very hot and long extended dry weather in our area..

Which plants are they on other than your Oro..?Any bug on this plant and at that size is easy to rid..What concerns me is what other plants they are on surrounding your Oro..

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back here and check this post out. It was rude for me to ask for help and then not check the advise that was given to me. You know how much I appreciate your knowledge and expertise.

Okay, I went online and checked out diffrent picks of what the invader was. I have had mealybugs before in the past and they were horrible to rid off of my plants.

I found(thank god!!) that they were scale and not the mealybugs. In an email, you had told me that Tuesday I would be VERY busy ridding them by hand and soaking the trees with the insecticidal soap or whatever I used. I ended up mixing rubbing alcohol and H20. It has worked pretty well so far and interestingly enough, I only found maybe about 7-8 on the 2 Oro and none on the other Oro. The sad part is that both are just flushing all kinds of new growth and for the first one, it is the second time since I almost lost it. For the second one, it is the FIRST time it has flushed and set flower buds. Actually both have set flower buds and I lost some of them along with the new growth from rubbing them with a wash cloth.

The other plants that I found them on was actually just my 'Maha Chinook' mango tree. I may have found one on my grafted cherimoya but so far that was it. I am 3/4 of the way done with treating them again and like I said earlier, the Oro's seem to be the only victims. My dwarf avocado, 2 cherimoyas, caimito, dwarf singapore plumeria, are bug free!!! I know the scale can almost be microscopic so I know I will probobly have to go back in either tomorrow or Saturday to make sure that there were no tiny scale or any eggs that hatched. I also have been making sure to keep up on good hygiene. I think this is critical when dealing with any bug infestations! By that I mean that I am removing dead or damaged leaves, leaves that have dropped, and spraying the surface of the soil(not soaking but lightly spraying) in case there is scale there. I also found scale on the bamboo supports I have in the pots. Maybe they didn't care for the FE thatwas coating the leaves?? I also had to get rid of that sticky crap that was on the leaves. I will keep you guys posted as to how they all do now.

I have to get back to work now. I still have all the plants on my plant table but thank fully they are nuch smaller and easier to take care of, except for maybe my Bird of Paradise which is sending up 2 nice blloming stems!

Rhizzo, if you read this please offer some tips! I am sorry I didn't I didn't include you!

Hi Mike, Thank you for taking out the time to help me. You know I really appreciate it :) I am walking around, and moving a little better but this last back surgery was probably the most invasive, major surgery I have ever had. Surgery was last January. They went in right above the top of the right leg. Surgery was to remove the artificial disc I had put in a few years ago. That was when you and Laura sent me that card, which I really appreciated! Anyhow, that artificial disc was the worst mistake I ever made. It just created more problems and pain. I also had 2 titanium screws break, that had to be removed from bone. So, they went in, and in order to get the disc out, they fractured my vertabrae. I bled out a lot, and they used my own blod to transfuse back into me. Because of that, they decided to postpone the rest of the surgery. They closed me up, and 4 days later, they reopened me. They got my fusion done with the first part of my surgery, so they put a new rod and cage in, And closed me up. I ended up being in the hospital for 5 days total. I went home pretty sore. I have had some nerve issues ever since. My right leg was numb from my toes up to my hip. Now, it is mostly my upper right thigh and a little on the back of the thigh. Ok now for my man o trees. I stupidly pruned my Ma ha Chinook over the winter. In response it started sending out tons of new growth. I lost it because the tree desperatly needed a new pot and repotting, and because I was recovering from surgery, I lost it :( I was really mad at myself Mike! That tree had bloomed once for me, and I am convinced it would have fruited this year! Grrrr! Not to mention that tree came from Hawaii and coat over $100! I still have my Carrie and it is going through a big growth flush. I am hoping it will bloom, but temps are cool here. We have had such a crappy summer here so are, I barely even had any inflos on my plumeria! My jades are doing pretty good. The ones we ordered from Germany are really doing good! I wanted to ask you about variegated Gollum, and Hob it jades. Any idea where I could find any? This has been a pretty busy week. After Tuesday morning things will slow down, and I will email you. Am I missing something. What are you gaining...is it that hard to pick the plug up and plug it into the wall???? You still need to pick up the hairdryer? Those would definitely fail inspection in my town for the one shown on the web link, and I would doubt many electricians would take on that liability.....repetive motion, strain relief, proper cable? The only thing I would recommend if you MUST have is an outlet attached to the cabinet rear or attached underneath the top with the hair dryer cord running from the outlet into the drawer. Your device will need a long cord. By the way, in our town, a house burned down from such a contraption...the hairdryer or curling iron was left running and the drawer was then shut. Again, what is being gained here...time savings for plugging in a cord? The proper way to store a 1000 plus watt device is to unplug them and properly coil and stow the cord. They should never be left plugged in all the time.

You are very welcome. I've drawn, according to my Mom, since I could hold a crayon in my hand. I would love to get a virtual pencil, but should just grab one of many sketch pads and draw. It's just that I no longer know what I want to draw. In late elementary school it was all horses. By seventh grade I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer and took every art and sewing class I could cram in my schedule. The only time I know what to draw is at times like these. So, I thank you for the oportunity. It filled a need in my life. I absolutely love both those light fixtures, but the one with the yellow had me drooling! I think the fixture would look great at about 36 inches above the table. You don't want to hide it up high in my opinion! I'm heading over to that site and check out their other fixtures. I love vintage fixtures. Our home is a queen anne style Victorian Revival. We didn't spend the money when we moved in adding period lighting, but I'd love to do so along the way when we can pay cash for them. We have nice fixtures, just not what I envision. Miranda, Thank you for the image with the color change. I appreciate the visual. The Soji white in person is really white. I painted the fascia just to see how it would look and it was too white. I painted over it with the Acia Haze. We also live in a Arizona with horse property so my husband doesn‘t want something too light where the dirt will show up. We are liking the Urban Puddy which is the bottom left in my original picture and the big board in the pictures I added. I put up the board I made of Roadside in the morning and post a picture. The painter will pressure wash tomorrow, tape Tuesday, and start painting Thursday. Based on the comments it seems we should go with the Urban Puddy. Or does anyone have a specific color they’ve used and been happy with that is similar to what we‘re all visualizing?
