Both the grapefruit and kumquat have fruit on them. Do I need to remove it before it matures for the long-term benefit of the tree?

I wish I had more experience with planting in the ground..Many here that have will gladly help you..

Thanks, thisisme...that gives me some reassurance!! I see that you are in my area, more or less...I actually went to Moon Valley Nursery. And then went to virtually all of their other locations as I coped with my major purchases!

So I saw at most of their locations, they had the Kumquat--not a lot of them, but usually a few. I don't know what part of town you are in, but apparently the Peoria location is closing, and they had some when I was there a few days ago. Otherwise, I'm on the North side of town and have explored a few other nurseries I might be able to recommend. I'm a newbie at this, but if I can help, I will!

I got a little chuckle out of the title. 24 foot trees, you would for sure need to be over caffeinated to handle those, LOL.

Those two trees near the water may be an issue with fruit and leaves falling in the pool. But moving them a foot won't help. You'd need to move them 6-8 ft.

Keep your trees watered but not drown. Give them a good soaking probably twice a week this winter. No more than every other day and no less than once a week.

Taking off the fruit won't have any affect other than slightly faster tree growth. But you probably don't want faster growth given that they don't have much room.

I had the same thought as fruitnut - you will have a lot of trouble picking out fallen leaves and fruit from your pool. There won't be any problem from the roots as I have several citrus in the side yard close to the foundations and they are all several years old and so far, so good.

I planted a Nagami Kumquat and a Meyers Lemon just last Spring, they've been in pots for 4-5 years prior to that. I decided to plant them in the ground to replace a couple of lychee trees and Mango from our brutal winter. I watered them every other day for the first week (this will depend on how hot your weather is right now)...then slowly tapered off to twice a week in a couple of weeks...then once a week. I also use Vigoro Citrus and Avocado timed-release from HD...once every two to three months at lower amounts. I prefer to feed a little more often (but half the amount).

I prune them once or twice a year to maintain a Dwarf size...short but wide frame. I don't like my fruit trees to get tall and lanky, its harder to maintain them when they get too tall, plus its much easier to pick the fruits too.
