Picea pungens 'Spring Yellow'

one of the few picea pungens.. with the big spring show.. that is actually blue the rest of the year ... in my garden anyway ..... enjoy .. ken

well it will remain untrained.. unless you practice ... the one on the hill ... collectors nursery .... 5/2003 the one on flat ground. which should be easier to see the whorls ... 7/2005 both were second year one gal plants ... 'the other' ... is in much more shade.. so is more sparse than the other on the hill .. it is hard to tell the first few years of growth as far as whorls.. so i will give you a B+ on your guess ... ken

hi joy it is extremely hard to take pix of cream and white tissue .... especially as a non-professional pix taker if i want to capture the white.. i would have to take the picture at mid day.. but then i would have contrast problems with the rest of the plant .... i tend to take pix near dusk .... to avoid stark contrast ... which leads the white to be more of a cream ... on top of that... i was told to plant this one in some amount of shade .... and both plants are in the shade of an oak .... which again.. interferes with the proper color and contrast .. again .. on top of that... its been a rather weird spring.. transitory coloration on pungens is highly dependent on air temps... the hotter it is at spring push.. the faster the color changes ... and i am finding.. this spring.. that they are changing fast... a couple abnormal 80 degree days.. does not make for a great show ... finally ... i have never seen maigold in person .. and my opinions rely simply on web pix ... which are all subjective based on the problems above .... and increased by relying on a multitude of different, presumable novice, pix takers .... the ONLY way to actually compare said plants.. would be to plant them within a few feet of each other ... and see them with your own eyes ... have a great day... or since you are across the pond.. and usually opposite my time.. have a great evening. .. please refer to the spring yellow post for more insite .... ken

Thanks coniferjoy I will make the correct changes. I appreciate that. I got Picea o. 'Gowdy Gold' from Dendo. Dendo got it from Helen Don years ago. He stated it was a tiny sport. Dendo propagated it one stick at a time until he had enough to offer but he only offers it to special people. Thats the best I can do with the info.

Do you have a conifer that Bluespruce doesn't?
Did I read some lust and longing between the lines of his reply? Or perhaps that is just a projection of my own sentiments....

I did a specific search for this cultivar, but found nothing. Where did you find it? Rare or mis-named? Expect coniferjoy to pop in with some nomenclature help...

Davesnursery shows us a picture of this 'Spring Yellow' at his photobucket but unfortunately this picture wasn't taken in Spring so the new growth isn't visible.
Maybe he can tell us more about this plant.

Really nice pics Ken. I really like this one. I saw one at Stonewall in Wisconsin a few years back but it wasn't for sale and haven't seen one since. I'm always envious of all your Spring-colored pungens and enjoy seeing the photos each Spring. Thanks for posting the pics.

if i go out there at high noon ...

the buds actually are blue.. and there is nearly no differentiation .... between old and new tissue ....

i can only capture the differing color pattern at dusk ...

and presumably dawn.. but i have other things to do at dawn ...

anyway .. daves pic .. i would wager.. was taken in too much light.. to actually show the color that i am showing.. obviously.. speculation ....

in other words.. daves looks just like mine at noon .... go figure ...

pix taking is more of an AFTER DINNER relaxing thing ...

I emailed Dave from Dave's Nursery, asking about this cultivar. His reply is:

"Hello again Barbara

I really do not have any info on it except that the new growth in the spring is a nice shade of yellow, more like a pastel, and after about 3 weeks it fades to blue. The blue on mine is almost like a baby blue color not a deep blue like Hoopsi, more like the blue on Mission Blue. My father is not around any longer so I canÂt talk to him but he had gotten the plant many years ago and it was still in his foundation planting around the house. From what I can see it might be a semi dwarf maybe growing about 6" a year here.
