'Plants of The Wild' A Seedling Company

I purchased for 50 dollars and some change the best conifer seedlings I've EVER gotten and wanted to share with everyone photos of this batch of 145 seedlings. All seedlings are the same price and are sent as a 4" plug (what a steal!) and all are ready to pot to a small tree band container for grafting this coming winter. I'm just shocked.

The company is online and grows native nursery stock only limited to the Pacific Northwest. They do however grow only the hardiest forms of varietal species. As an example the batch of Pinus contorta var. latifolia is from an Idaho seed source. What a deal!

Abies fraseri

Juniperus scopulorum (The only grower I've ever found to have Juniper [seedlings])

Larix occidentalis (Larix are virtually never offered either or cost more than 35 cents a seedling - what a deal)

And the kicker to all this is from what I remember about ordering is that after you've met the minimum which is about 25 plants (you may wish to check this as I'm not sure) is that you can purchase any number of random seedlings for that 35 cent each price. It's crazy.

Definitely the best source I've found, plus you can't beat working with plugs versus bareroots, in my opinion. They pot up so quickly and less casualties too. Less work and better results, what else is there to get worked up about!

Nope, the foliage and the roots are not balanced. They will need care at least for one year. They were pushed with fertilizers.

Fun, LG, fun. They're surprisingly good for screening too. There's one spot in my hop seed hedge that was a little thin and I just crammed a seedling in there and it shot up to 5 feet this summer and filled the space nicely. I refuse to deal with picking up leaves, lol, so I cut them back HARD once the leaves start to fall, but they're really fun plants. I hope you get a lot of takers. You have a nice variety of seedlings! My very favorite one is Pink Intrigue X Braided Edgings. The color, form and double edge are wonderful. Fox Hunter X Northern Nocturne also stands out in the crowd for me. It was interesting to see what you got with Sabine Baur X Mort Morss. I crossed Mort with some eyed daylilies, but the seedlings have not bloomed yet. I'm amazed at how many people are getting skinny Moment in the Sun babies. A friend on another forum showed some UF seedlings with Moment in the Sun as a parent, and I was sure the seeds had been mislabeled. But now I see you got a narrow petaled kid from it too. I repotted my seedlings to slightly bigger containers to have them ready in the Spring for grafting. The two seedlings with multiple sprouts only have one root system and they are connected at the base of the stem. The interesting thing I noticed that the the seedling with the 4 sprouts had the best root system. The seedling with the 2 sprouts had the next best root system and all the single sprouts were about the same...nothing as impressive as the other two. (and P.S. of the 3 grafts I did... the side graft took and the two cleft grafts failed)

Your link goes to the likely ID - Pyrrhopappus pauciflorus. That species' upper leaf should have several deep lobes. Pyrrhopappus carolinianus (how did you get Texas out of that?), usually has an upper leaf with entire margins, or with 1 pair of basal lobes.

A perfect plant in one season. Those roots have numerous white flairs extending from the bottom of the plug which were not photographed, so a little unfair for me to say so at this time.

In the past Nothotsuga, I would have paid more for plants possibly with dried, encircling roots. These are healthy.

Overfertilization is correct however for those of you that realize a one foot plant with and I say, a "balanced" root system taking place in one year is not the norm for most any seedling. And Nothutsuga is correct in that all are one-year plug-grown. And unfortunately it could be argued back and forth that my steroid-juiced-up plants aren't as healthy as those that could have been, grown slower. Well... The results will still catch up, meaning slowing will occur. Good call. An opposing view would be an example of Chamaecyparis obtusa being grafted to Thuja... speeds up, then slows down to resume to its normal growing speed.

Then again, I'm happy! I'm recommending them to anyone. My pocketbook isn't a lot lighter.

I got my bill for shipping and it was 35 bucks. So not 55 but 90 total. They got me! Still, they have stuff unlike anyone else if you dig.
