Does anyone here whack them back a little?

Hi there:

I have two Lilac Time Dahlias that are lovely, but I'm also sort of stunned at how big they are. (a newb) I just measured: 6' to the tip and about 30' wide. Keeping them together has been a weekly chore, with stakes that are just not big enough....

Then a friend told me she visited a Dahlia farm along the coast here, and the farmer there told her to cut the stalk way down after the initial bloom and you don't have to stake them quite so much (for mine, I'm practically tying every head up, they are so huge).

I was wondering if anyone in a similar zone has done that sort of thing, and if so, could you explain how? I would love to have mine more around 4'. I never really thought of dahlias as "small trees" until this summer! :-)
