can i leave dahlia tubers in ground
Comments (8)I've posted a link below to the Dahlia Forum since I think they are best qualified to answer your questions. I acquired some Dahlias for the first time in 9 years from a friend in early spring and decided to get back in the swing of things with them as they are deer resistant and just so beautiful. Needed some insight and the DF was very helpful and kind. I used to grow quite a few on another property until a back injury stopped me, but that is passé and I'm ready to get back in the game. :O) You do get snow in London so I would imagine that the foliage will die sooner or later. I did take mine out before the foliage went because I had to but it was just a matter of two weeks before they would have succumbed to a frost. You might be a bit different with your temperate weather. Whatever you do, leave at least a few inches of the stem or you may lose all the 'eyes' which will grow next year. I dig then hose the tubers clean, then place in my cool basement to dry. I did divide this fall because I'm too busy with winter sown seedlings in the spring. Whatever I can do now, I do. Comments (90)Mel-grower, Thanks for rephrasing the question, as it is a good one. While potatoes have eyes sporadically all over the potatoe, dahlias have eyes only on the collar. I have split the tuber as you suggest with a piece of the tuber, and a bit of the collar containing an eye. The problem that often occurs is that rot sets in, hence I try to minimize the cut on the tuber. That being said, I have had some success doing it the way you describe. Sometimes, I have found the tubers to be too huge, and have cut off the bottom part. When I cut, I always add some bulb dust/fungicide to help cure the cut, and prevent rot. I usually start them in the medium first, so that I can clearly see where the eyes are, and then make the cut. We all learn through experimentation. Try some, and let us know how it works for you. Comments (5)just reading the discussion regarding saran wrap.I have used Press and Seal on about 1/2 of my stock for the last two years and have been very happy with the results. I somtimes leave two or three tubers connected to the crown the Press and Seal allows my to do this and still keep a barrier between the tubers in case one spoils. When I get tired of wrapping, I store the balance of my stock in wood chips. The wood chips do not work as well for small tubers, but seem to be okay for some of the larger or more "hearty" varietes of tubers (Tempest, O'Condah, Blue Bayou, Black Satin, Nijinsky)...See MoreShould I dig up dahlia tubers now or in spring??
Comments (4)Hi there! I'm not an expert, but I'll put in my 2 cents... I've always heard that fall is the best time to do this. It will give the tubers a chance to grow a little bit before winter. There is a great book called Month by Month Gardening in the South. I think it's by Hastings. I'll bet it has something on when to do that. I bet you could google it, too! Good luck!...See Moremarysy
