I would reccomend contacting an agriculture agent in your area and seeing if someone teaches grafting lessons in your area. There is alot of good info on the subject online but I think this is something that is much easier to get the hang of if you can see it done in person. I know LSU has some ag offices in various areas of S. Louisiana and maybe one would could be in your area? Hope this helps.

I recently posted here for the first time just below:
I have grown a few citrus in my greenhouse over the last few years and am just starting out grafting and growing starts. I am right about to order a bunch of rootstock from a grower. If you send me couple small brances for budwood I can try to graft you a grapefruit onto one and will send it back to you. When you send the budwood, if can you take a picture of the grapefruit whole and cut in half so I can see what it looks like. I'd like to try to identify it as I will probably be keeping a sample for myself.
I can also send you a rootstock seedling if you want to do it yourself. Rootstock seedlings are sold in bundles of 100, so I am trying to get the best all around rootstock for general use. You can email me directly if you want.

Lauri,
Dont accept citrus (or its relatives) from any state
with HLB disease. Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana
have it now. The psyllids that can carry HLB are in
Texas and California.

You need a number of small rootstock trees. Talk to
your local Master Gardeners Association thru your
Cooperative Extension Office for a lead on this.
They probably can get you seeds or wild trifoliates.
They may even graft one or two for you.

It will help to get the method down in your mind
before watching a live demo so you'll know what
questions to ask, Etc.

I can explain some more details after you check
these things out if you're still interested.
Getting the right knife and tape and knowing when
and how of selecting budwood is important.
Most novices kill a number of rootstocks but
it will make you proud to see those new shoots
of your first grapefruit clone, an exact replica
of the tree you desire.

I planted a seed from a Rio Red gf because my
nieghbor had a seedling tree 15 foot tall and
covered with huge red gf. Six years later I
have a white gf that looks like nothing
I ever ate. I took care to sprout the seeds
in a paper towel so I would get a polyembroyic
duplicate and all that.
