Magic Amethyst vs. Palace Garden Beauty

In some photos Magic Amethyst and Palace Garden Beauty look similar. Does anyone know how they compare in real life? Is one better than the other?

I've seen Palace Garden Beauty and it was beautiful on a cooler day, but sort of a muddy mauve on a hot day. Is Magic Amethyst a clearer color? Also, how dark is MA - in some photos it looks lavender and in others it looks purple.

Hi Juliet!

I haven't grown or seen PALACE GARDEN BEAUTY, but I grow MAGIC AMETHYST. It is a great plant up here in Rhode Island, very hardy. I don't see the colors fade much at all in the afternoon. I think you would be very happy with MA. The color is lavender to my eyes. Here is a pic that I think is true to color.

Hi Juliet,
I have them and really love both. Personally, I think Palace Garden Beauty is prettier. That lavender BLUE eye and edge really does it for me. PGB has never looked muddy for me, while Magic Amethyst has looked muddy on occasion, but not very often. They are both good parents and have multiplied well for me. Neither has been a rebloomer here.

I am in zone 5/b 6/a in Northwest Missouri about 50 miles north of Kansas City. I plant my bud unions about 2" deep when planting and I don't normally really do much in the way of winter protection on any of my roses. Mother Nature supplies a vast quantity of oak and maple leaves from trees in my yard that seem to congregate around the base of my roses every Fall of their own natural accord. So, I just leave them there and then blow and rake them off in the spring after all chance of frost is past. This seems to do the trick for me. I only lost one puny growing Strike It Rich grandiflora rose this past winter even though it was a long, cold, snowy winter for a good four months. This SIR rose was not a good grower from the moment it was planted so it was no surprise that it was dead this spring when I went to do my early spring pruning duties. It wasn't the lack of protections fault it died, it was just a dud anyway. I even grow St. Patrick, Marilyn Monroe, and Color Magic which I have been made understood to be very winter tender roses. Mine usually die back to about ground level or slightly higher up the cane, but by first Spring flush you would never know it because they rebound so quickly and vigorously that they are in bloom right along with everything else in the garden. Supposedly mauves and yellows are the tenderer of the rose colors to grow during the winter, but I haven't ever really found that to be true in my garden. I think the big secret to winter hardiness is a healthy bush before winter sets in and that you have no new red growth on your bushes when the first freezes start. If I do see some tender new red canes/leaves/foliage, etc...I prune it off before the freezing sets in. That way the bush isn't damaged and stunned in the process. Now here's one that's almost impossible for me to answer!!!! I already grow them all!!!! Not really!!!! I don't recall the names of what hoyas belonged to whom but I did see a nice sigillatis that I wouldn't mind having,Dee has a nice yellow mindorensis that I would wave the wand at!!! I have both the A & B clones of sp. Lata Iskandar and can't wait to see either of them bloom!!! The B clone seems to be a bit on the slow side getting started but A is doing fine. Neither have shown the nice red veins yet but I haven't stressed them yet either. Next year I plan to grow those two hard as Antone said and in as much full sun as they can take!!

I am surprised 'Ploughmen's' lunches are so popular in London, especially when you consider the lack of agriculture in the area . . . although my late Mother could remember sheep grazing in Hyde Park and it is possible to see horses being exercised in Rotten Row. Mary, a TV ad. claimes that more cider is being drunk in the UK these days, but it's from an Irish co. that produces the stuff. In this neck-of-the-woods they make a local 'rip-gut' variety; powerful strong. There should be a better choice of beer/ale about these days, other than the dreaded Watney's Red Barrel that used to dominate the market some years ago. Britrail passes are still available but you may need a second mortgage to travel by train. Travellers are in the ridiculous situation of using trains to get away from the over-crowded roads, only to find there are not nearly enough seats, especially for peak-time journeys. The rail co's increase the fares partly to put people off from this method of travelling, plus general greed and claims to spend the extra cash on 'upgrading' the service. Still the best way of seeing the country IMO. An elderly US Aunt always uses the train when over her . . .often going in totally the wrong direction . . . and has made endless 'friends' on these journeys. All, thanks for the comments. I didn't notice any fragrance...I'm not one to notice on any plant though. More of visual guy vs scent. I got this from Rarefind and it didn't have any retained leaves. Although I've heard of some complain about retained leaves on H. vernalis, they don't retain leaves here. The Asian hybrids retained leaves and don't get any fall color here. Plus they only flower during mild winters and have dinky flowers. Ron, are you saying this is a possible H. vernalis hybrid? I wouldn't say the flowers are dinky by any means, then again I don't get to see the best of the Asian hybrids outside my area. Bogturtle, check out the link below regarding leaf retention. Diane is listed as one of the worst for leaf retention. Leaf Retention "This time of year a question that often appears on our blog is which cultivars are best for not retaining their leaves? Unfortunately, some cultivars of witch hazel tend to hold their leaves from the previous fall thus masking the spring flowers. I find alot of difference in them...love them both too. I think MA needs warmer morning's to open nice and show it's real colour. Both make beautiful clumps IMHO.

Wow! My Magic Amethyst has never looked that purple. Mine is more of a pink lavender than a purple lavender. Beautiful photos Rick and Leslie! I looked up the stats on the two, and PGB does have higher budcount and branching. Here's how my PGB looks after a cool night. It's actually prettier very early when the nights are cooler.

Thanks everyone for your beautiful photos and comments! PGB and MA are both so pretty, but I think I like PGB more. PGB seems to have a bluer eye and higher branching/budcounts are always good!

I have had Magic Amethyst for many years and every year when it blooms I am so delighted because it is just beautiful. I love its color and its round form with the ruffles. Pictures do not do it justice. And it blooms for a long time. I think anyone would be happy with this daylily.

Two of my favorite daylilies in one post!

I grow them both, but am partial to Magic Amethyst because of the richer color, wide form & how intricate it always is.
