The first, grafted on thuja orintalis died last winter.

Hi ClÃ©ment,
I have the same problem with some of my conifers at my Pinetum.
The last 2 winters were very strong and the damage was always at the north side of the plants because of the very cold northern wind we had.

Scott, I can remember bad droughts as a child in Melbourne, Australia, where we had severe water restrictions. But the current drought is far worse and wider in scope. Nor is it simply a recent event, but Australia has been suffering drought conditions for years now and things have been getting worse and worse. It makes our summer "droughts" here in Maryland look laughable (and they can be pretty serious for farmers here). Whether this is related to global warming is not clear. Australia has always had cycles of severe droughts. Let's hope this is part of a cyclical pattern, for if it becomes the norm my hopes of retiring and getting some land in the bush in Australia will have to be retired themselves.

Clumps of grass (or bad roots over winter?)

Grubs are (mostly, anyway) inactive over the winter. I noticed a very few when digging in the gardens that were awake, large, and in charge. They didn't live long. ;-) You would have been more likely to see the issue at the end of last summer or the beginning of fall if it were grubs, but it's still not impossible, of course. If you can dig and verify that it is grubs...well, do that and get back to us. Late winter and (now) early spring have been really wet and irregular this year. The temperatures were swinging wildly through March, too, to the point that two of my butterfly bushes frost-heaved right out of the ground, breaking the base roots as they went. Those base roots are as thick as my thumb... I've never seen anything like that before. It's possible, though also not likely, that heaving and cracking damaged the grass in a few areas. I noticed one or two areas, quite small, where that happened, but I have a newly renovated lawn and it's a bit thin on the southwestern side. You can reseed, although spring isn't the best time to do it. If it's a bluegrass lawn, it'll fill itself in, eventually. 3 square feet is about 1.7 feet on a side, a bit much for KBG to do in a single season, although feeding it will help. Fescue and rye won't repair that fast or that well and will require reseeding. You could pull plugs from the inevitable areas where the grass grew into your gardens or onto the foundation. Keep them watered for about a month and they should take.

Hello Marie, I'm sorry to learn of the loss of some of your exquisite plants, I hope you are able to rescue them and the remainder will thrive as usual in your capable hands. Florida would be the last place I would have imagined this to happen. The winter has certainly had different effects wherever we are situated. As Brian mentioned, the UK has been utterly blown away and also swamped in parts. Even high up where we live (thankfully with no floods) the ground is completely saturated and will take ages to dry out. I really feel for those who have lost homes and possessions as a result, one can only imagine what it must be like. We had 'snow' on 2 occasions this time, but not enough to make even a mini snowball and have had several frosts so far. Hopefully the current sunny/mild spell will continue and we can bid winter 2013/14 goodbye. As you all realise the UK is not really that DR friendly at the best of times so my DR's are all housebound and in the main are OK, despite the seedlings being ravaged by an attack of the dreaded spider mites, sigh. Hi Sharon, good grief, 70'' of snow!!!...I would only have 2'' more to go before I was buried under that lot...! Spring will soon be here in full force folks! Gill UK

Wonderfull conifers. I am sorry about your losses.

I have suffered more dmage to my plants this last winter then all the last 10 winters combined.

Hate to pour salt on your wounds...but here in NH especially in the southern part of the state we have an incredible past winter and the best spring that I ever remember. Warm to hot temps already this spring.....got a ton of rain late winter lotsa flooding but I will take that over snow. Everything is early this year....Dogwoods which are a June bloom here for us are in full bloom right now...man life is great.

Clement could you explain where you are, in a broad sense at least. Some of us do not just "know" these things.
About a decade ago Fairweather Gardens claimed to have found a mature Austrocedrus on Cape Cod, which would have made it roughly zn 7 hardy. But they never offered the plant again after the initial round of cuttings. Its possible the plant just wouldn't grow anywhere else on the East Coast. Parts of Cape Cod like Nantucket, although slightly warmer on average than the PNW in summer, have annual maximum temperature that are no worse, and in fact lower than some parts of the PNW.

Sorry for your losses Clement, I feel your pain. Though it's a non-complaint compared to yours, I had about 30 Japanese maple specimens die and about 20 potted conifers.

Very brutal weather here as well, here's to Spring, Summer and a better few decades.
