What do you use for fertilizer and with what results?

I figure it would be nice if we could share our fertilizers with each other in simple terms. Then each of us can decide what might work for us..:-) Thanks alot. Think this would be helpful for a many here looking for great fertilizers, especially for citrus.

What brand name citrus fertilizer do you use?

Where do you purchase it?

What other products do you use for nutrients? or adittives?

How often do you feed in summer and winter?

What is your fertilizer regimend?

What results do you get with your fertilzer?

What are the forum rules on naming fertilizer brands? I know some don't allow it due to advertising and stuff.

I use a citrus-specific one, 25-5-12.5 with trace minerals. Foliar feed of epsom salts once monthly. Dose of iron and epsom salts in the water twice yearly.

Well if there was a rule on naming type fertilizer, then half the forums with the name of Miricle Gro would have been wiped out..right....:-)

I think a lot depends on your soil and the amount of time, money and effort you want to expend on fertilizing. Some rosarians make their own organic mixes, some swear by nothing more than Miracle Gro. In my alkaline clay soil, semi-organic garden, I use Mills Magic or a locally packaged organic, called Miller's Blue Label made with dried poultry waste. It's tough to tell whether one is better than the other but MM is sold through a local rose society and the MBL is a local product. I also use another locally packaged product sold through a nursery that isn't organic but it only takes a 1/4 cup per 3ft of bush so it's economical and fast-acting so I use it for the spring feeding frenzy. Another product I really like is that Miracle Gro Easy Feed (or some-such) that screws into a hose-end sprayer harness. That stuff is just WAY too easy to use when 25% of your roses have to be hand-watered anyway. Since we don't fertilize during June through September, I put down a little Osmacote in early June. No matter where you are or what you use, though, make sure you water the soil thoroughly before and after using any fertilizer or amendment. I don't advocate using a sytemic rose food ever. There's something about applying toxic chemicals above the water table that makes me shudder.

As long as I own my adenium plants and all of my other plants, I don't use anything else but Osmocote. Many people use many different kinds of fertilizer, and if they like it, they continue to use it. For me, I like Osmocote. Marie

What do you use to fertilize your container roses?

I'm alternating fish emulsion, alfalfa tea, and Mill's Magic Liquid. From time to time I've tried applying Rose-Tone or Mill's Magic to the soil but liquids are sooo much easier. I like to spread a llittle compost on the top of the soil, as they do seem to "sink" a little over time. Since it's so hot here I put about 1/2" of shredded hardwood mulch to keep them from drying out so fast. I've only been growing roses in containers for 3 years so I'm still developing a routine, I like to ready what everybody is doing. Mine haven't been getting their share of coffee grounds and banana peels-- I think the potted roses would enjoy them, don't know why I never gave them any before.

I use whole fruit spikes (4-5) every few weeks in my lotus bog, but I'm not sure that's even enough. I used to use very small tomato spikes in my 7 gallon water lily containers But I do think I'm under fertilizing the water lilies for a couple years. It's hard to know how much you're giving in those chunks of fruit tree spikes. I would just go by their response. if they seem happy and are making blossoms, I think you're using enough. I had problems last year with my water lilies, and maybe it was because I wasn't fertilizing enough. But like I said.....if yours seem happy and productive, I wouldn't change anything. But...........only twice a season seems sort of low. Would you say your lilies are doing well?

Hey Mike - Long time no Speak - I come back and now people are following rules? Im going to have to find a new panel!

I have one golf ball size lime on my tree - one flower = one lime. weird.

I used a Miracle Grow soil - and add a few drops of concentrate citrus food. each time I water - which is about every two weeks.

How are you doing?

binion, I missed you!! Where the heck have you been? Are you ok?
I was begining to think that you got lost in the woods had you taken your use to be sic plant to the place of no return. It is great to see you back!
I can't believe that you even got a fruit!!WOW!
Do you remmeber last winter I was telling about a tree that lost all it's leaves to " who knows whatever" The ponderosa lemon? Can you believe that even though ALL my trees are doing spetacular, that stupid tree never grew ONE leaf since then. Is this wierd or what. You thought your tree had problems. That thing was out in full sun all summer givin the best of care, and it had about 10 leaves on it, older leaves all summer. No new growth, shoots, nor leaves since last year!! All it keeeps doing is flowering, they fall off, the tree is bare, then flowers and then bare over and over again.....NUTS!

I am only a newbie and certainly no expert but all my citrus plants react very well to Lilly Miller's Alaska fish fertilizer which you can get at Wal-mart very cheaply.
