Aloe

Hi,

I just bought an aloe plant at Walmart. It's in a small plastic pot and seems too tall for the pot. Should I repot it now or wait until spring? I've just started to read the forum and never knew there were so many types of aloe (really new to this). I've had aloes in the past, but never managed to keep them alive for very long. So I'm learning alot reading here.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Hi Rebel215,
I have had a few aloe plants and have found out that they would not survive because I was over watering them. This summer my wife bought me another aloe at a garage sale and she was told to water it very little and now it is a very big beautiful aloe. I think your aloe would be okay until the spring to repot, If you are going to keep it the house you could just set it in another nice or decorated pot so you could not see the plastic pot.

Thanks. Think I'll wait and do as you said - put it in another pot.

Hi-I notice that you're both in zones 8 and 9, so just a word of caution here: a.polyphylla is completely intolerant of temperatures >85° inside the pot--cool roots are a must. Speaking from personal experience, keep the pots themselves shaded completely from direct sun. You might even put a few ice cubes around the edges of the pots if it gets very warm. Here are a few of mine just a couple of hours ago. I don't worry unless the temp goes below 25°, and mild snow is a relief to them: The 2 largest pots are 22", and the other 2 are 17", and in need of larger pots. As a rule of thumb, the pot should be at least 2" wider than the leaf span. Happy growing! Rick in CT

If the buds had been fertilized they would have become seed pods. If they dry and fall off, they are done. You don't need to cut off the stalk, it will dry up as the moisture is resorbed by the plant. After a while, you can puck it out with no resistance. It will bloom when it's genes tell it too, starting in late Spring, and continuing through the summer. It is possible for a large mature rosette to make several inflorescences. The best way to encourage blooming is to grow a happy plant. Happy growing! Brad

They usually are in the mix of 2" and 3" succulents you can buy at the big box stores for $3-$4 apiece. I like buying the very small ones because they are likely not to have mite infections. Also remember some sold lately as A. striata are hybrids, which can by identified by their marginal teeth--A. striata does not have marginal teeth. Saw a whole lot of the striata hybris yesterday at an Armstrong's, labeled as Aloe noblis(!)

As long as there's soil in the pot, you're OK...I've seen mature Aloes that were just a big root-ball with little soil...LOL. That's not good. Just keep it in a bright location. Aloes will lose their spots if in direct sun, so if you like that look, keep it in filtered sun or artificial (flouresent) light. When you repot it, you can use cactus mix, but if you use standard potting soil, I advise adding sand or perlite for better drainage.

The easiest tip for watering is wait until the soil is dry between waterings...it's better to under-water a succulent than to over-water.
