I have grown candy lily from seed by doing the following. Also bloom the first year, lots more bloom second year. I started them by putting them in a zip lock in a moist soil mix in the fridge for about 3-4 weeks. Then I planted them and under the lights they went. My friend did it this way - a wet/moist papertowel in a baggie in the frig for 4w, then gave them a little bottom heat to get them started, and under the lights. I also winter sowed some and they bloomed for me here in MN the second year with great results! Good luck! Sandy

I certainly wouldn't want to discourage you but the genus Calla is composed of plants that grow in a forest swamp. According to the Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London they commonly thrive between the edge of the forest and a raised bog. Basically they are bog/swamp plants rather than a house plant. They can be grown in damp sphagnum moss since they also commonly live as a creeper in streams and ponds. They must stay damp and love bright light which may make growing them indoors in dim light difficult. The plants are members of the family Araceae so try looking up the International Aroid Society and do some research on that site. I would say your plan is pretty risky. I tried it this year for my daughter's June 25th wedding. I had several calla bulbs that I had planted several years ago in the ground that had been blooming reliably every May. (no special over-wintering precautions, but then, our winters here in north Texas are probably much milder than yours). Then, I planted a few every weekend for 5 or 6 weeks, beginning mid-March. Well, I think the only week I didn't have any callas in bloom from mid-May to mid-July was the week of my daughter's wedding! I had blooms before the wedding and blooms after but none for the ceremony! Luckily, we had arranged with a florist to get the bulk of the flowers....we were just hoping to have a few from the garden for sentimental reasons. Check around with florists in your area. Since we were doing very simple arrangements for the bride and bridesmaids (three large callas wrapped with a ribbon for the bride, 1 for each bridesmaid) and on the tables (a single calla in a bud vase), we just ordered plain callas stems from the florist and added the ribbons ourselves. I think we ended up getting the giant callas for 2.75 a stem and the smaller ones for the tables for 10/$15....or something like that. We did find a large difference in pricing between florists, so call EVERYONE! You can also order them online from SAM's and online florists, but we wanted the security of having a local florist so that if something went wrong with getting the callas in, there'd be someone responsible who would make sure we had some kind of flowers! I loved the callas for the wedding.....they are so elegant and simple....to me they're the perfect wedding flower. Good luck and congratulations!

Postal service does provide USPS Priority Mail boxes for free but if you order them online through the USPS site, they only do it in bundles,not just 1. You may want to visit your local PO and see if they have any. Be careful what you pickup as they have FLAT RATE boxes which can cost more than what a PRIORITY MAIL box would cost to send. You can always ask at the counter once your ready to ship to have them give you options for sending and see what the cost difference would be if you don't have a scale in your home. Postage for daylilies is based on good faith that the receiver will send check/money order for the actual amount once they get them based on the actual cost of shipping. HOWEVER, you could just state a dollar amount for what you anticipate the cost will be. Alot depends on the zip code and weight of the package. Hope this helps. Julia
