Looks like I'm back in the Fuchsia addiction, I'm going to be more selective in the ones I keep, hopefully keep the numbers down to a reasonable amount, at one time I had a collection of 350 give or take a few but that was when I was much younger. 50 is the magic number I have decided on, keeping to that is going to be the hard part. It's like eating peanuts can't just stop at one.

Anyone else growing Fuchsias? Feel free to post them here I'm sure some of you are growing real beauties.

Annette, fuchsias are one of those plants that doesn't really like our lower Midwest weather and they certainly wouldn't like this year, one of the hottest (so far) and driest in several years!

When they are well-grown there is nothing more beautiful and yours are! I don't believe I could give them up either.

been awhile, had totally forgotten about this thread, thank you for the kind comments glad you enjoyed the pictures, because i sure liked taking them :) dahli22: I really like the poppies mixed in with the chervil too, and the best part about it is that i do nothing to maintain them ;), unfortunately i don't think the NoID plant is anything in the fritillaria genus. and yes i eat the sea kale and lots of it :D, i eat the flower buds, the stems and the leaves all raw, some people cook them but i haven't tried that yet. was just digging around in the computer and found some more pictures from the summer :) enjoy! more sea kale fuchsia, climbing hydrangea and clematis. again. and one last time wild roses growing along our horsepen old poplar growing a root inside itself small buttercops elderberrie in the back of our yard in bloom and one in front of the house the burial mount again later on the season with new flowers closeup with our house in the background :) and to finish off with some fall/winter pictures :) from october i think ' ÃÂ¨from november

If they are hardy fuchsias (very likely since many of these are species - most of the tender ones are hybrids and not very tall growing) then you should be good. Your post has garbled all the size info for my reader (strange symbols rather than numbers or letters), but if the size is significant (over 4') then you most likely DO have hardy fuchsias, probably F. magellanica. I'd be a bit leary of full sun planting for these in the heat of Georgia - part shade would be better. Some forms of magellanica can grow quite tall - I have one that hits 8' regularly - but they tend to be very shrubby rather than tree-like in form. They can also experience some winter dieback, so often pruning back deadwood will reduce their size significantly but they grow back quickly.

I live in the Northern Willamette Vally in Oregon, and the rule of thumb, (sort of) seems to be that if they are in the ground, most can take full sun, if its not in too hot of a micro climate, (think surrounded by black top, or against a hot wall.) Then there is another bit of Fuschia lore that says that the orange tones, creme, and some others can take sun better that some others. I dont remember if that meant others that were pale pinks and lavenders or others that were the deep reds and blues, but some types are definately more heat and sun tolerant. to my knowledge, none of them love soggy cold soil though, and if that were my plant, Id probably gently unpot it, and loosen up the soil by mixing in a bit of some dry compost, then repot it and maybe bring it inside at night or cover it with a piece of plastic, even an old plastic picknick table cloth will do. You can just slide it under a deck chair and throw the cover over that if you dont have a cold frame. I know that after a while it seems pretty simple, but when I was just starting to collect these I lost them every so often, and in fact I still loose a few every winter. Not a happy thing, but we are all learning. The good news is,this spring more than 60 made it :) Dont give up. It might also have been stressed when you got it, and with some TLC you will be fine

Vapor , mine would sometimes be more golden for sure . It was large , seems to top out at 7-8 ft by 4 wide and was a very nice vase shape shrub that was self supported. It bloomed a lot . Seeing these pics makes me want to buy it again .. but I’m not sure I have the room! Very good health , some blackspot but never naked from it . I’d just brush the leaves off . It really was one of my favorite roses! thank you so much jjoc !!! Glad you brought this thread up :)

I have grown them from time to time. Once it gets hot here though, they die, even in the shade.

If I ever get a real greenhouse, with an AC and heater and lots of glass, I will definitely be buying lots of them. I just love them.

I had 'Rocket Fire' one year and 'Diva' another year, or at least they looked like yours. They were beautiful all through spring. Bloomed and bloomed.

THANK YOU for looking :). I know these don't do well in warmer climates, they don't even appreciate the warm windy julys we have most years. This has been an especially great year for the fuchsias so far.
I so drool over the plants a lot of you can grow and I can't. I love looking at the pictures over and over again so thought you would like to see some of my fuchsia blooms. Of late I seem to be drawn to taking closeups of flowers rather then overall views which is kind of hard in my garden which is made up of little garden vignettes (sp?)

Glenda my corkscrew vine is actually growing, I will be thrilled if it flowers for me. I must try to winter it as I only had 5 seeds, only one germinated. I also have a blue pea vine, maybe it will bloom for me to. Both are in containers so they can be moved to the greenhouse if necessary.

As far as fuchsias go maybe some of the triphylla types would work in warmer climates, they need more heat then most hybrids.

Your fuchsias are amazing, Annette. And you think of those as just a few ... my, my. I'm surprised that your user name here isn't Fuchsiaqueen. 350 just boggles my mind.

LOL TM, 4 years ago I had over 65 fuchsia baskets hanging in the lathhouse, then there were all the ones in pots on shelves, lots in the greenhouse, more in my little courtyard but not the 350 I had in the 80's. Back then there were several sources where you had your pick of over 500 varieties. Those days are gone, you have to be a Sherlock Holmes to track down other than the same old, same old now. I know of a couple mailorder sources in the states and I did order from the states for a few years but the fuchsias got bogged down in customs, by the time I got them most needed tender loving care. It's a good thing the place I ordered from sent top notch plants, if they hadn't been such healthy plants they wouldn't have survived.
I think if I counted the ones I have now there's about 30, nose to the ground I'm sure I'll find a few more nice ones, I think 50 is a nice round number to keep but knowing me next year I'll be back up to 100 or so. I've made up my mind to be very selective with what I keep ;) .
