Daylilies produce seeds. They could have been crossed by a bee with the purple ones, the pod ripens and breaks, seeds fall, new plants grow up with the old plants and you have a new hybrid. That's why most tear off the seed pods before they mature. Often the bee pollen ones are ugly. But the yellows didn't turn purple. They sound to me like they'd be prettier than regular stellas or McStellas as some like to call them. Can you post a picture?

:D Not as many as I will have come spring! Let's see, up until now I had Stella de Oro, H. Fulva 'Europe', a yellow NOID much like Stella but different shade of yellow & bloom time, 5 surprise NOIDs from a local AHS sale- non of which have bloomed yet, a red NOID that hasn't bloomed in several years, then last fall I planted Breathless Beauty from WalMart and Wineberry Candy from a plant exchange here on the forums. Now I have ~100 seedlings started, another couple hundred seeds coming, and 32 ordered for spring so far. Not too bad for the first few months of a new addiction. I'd say from reading the rest of these posts that I've been fairly disciplined- though a good deal of that has to do with not much land to plant them on and being addicted to other plants too (OGR for example).

To the best of my knowledge, daylily rust has only been found on a plant in one of the big box stores. I have not heard of rust in any garden in Colorado. I regularly buy from Southern gardens where rust has been a problem. If anyone would get it, it should be me. My theory is that our climate is too dry to support it. I've seen rust on my roses only once in the last 40 years. Daylilies in Colorado have very few pests. I have never seen aphids on the garden plants, only in the greenhouse. You may see some leaf streak, depending on how much you water and how you water. It's a purely cosmetic problem and doesn't kill anything. You won't have bulb mites because daylilies don't have bulbs. Sounds like a portion of your old clump simply died off.Spring sickness is a very random thing. You can't prevent it. You may or may not get it. It will never be the same plants as in previous years and they always grow out of it. I hope you're buying your daylilies from a reliable source that specializes in daylilies. If you order from places like SpringHill and Wayside Gardens, you are likely to be disappointed. Our garden is an American Hemerocallis Society Display Garden. We grow around 4,000 cultivars and many companion plants. I encourage you to visit our garden during the bloom season to get an idea how different cultivars do here. We have our annual Open Garden this year on July 12th.
