Thanks for all the interesting and helpful responses to my post...for starters, no one except Walmart (where I bought the plant)has ever heard of "Blue Moon" rose ! I decided to plant her in a very large old oak half-barrel...I used Miracle Grow soil that allegedly feeds as well...I also purchased a "Mr Lincoln" rose, this one bare root; he's also planted in a half-barrel. Unlike the Blue Moon, which "came with" a few leaves, Mr. L has only 3-4 little "spurts" of yellow-reddish-looking growths... Fickle Mother Nature has bombarded Bullhead City with "brutally cold" temps of 55-60 highs, 37-40 lows and strong rainy winds alternating from the north and south! Both barrels are on the south side and so far surviving MN's brutality ! In fact, they're faring better than I ! I can't seem to get warm, indoors or out ! This is first winter I've had a $100 plus gas bill ! and I've lived here 20 years... I bought a society garlic plant,which looks like it needs dividing already...I plan to do that, and give the roses each some company in their barrels...I've heard they and parsley will help keep the aphids away... My big question (assuming these two roses survive)is should I give them any nourishment (in view of the ammended soil I used)if so, when ? So far, my major gardening accomplishments have been elephant bush, portulacas and willow acacia trees ! I'm hoping I can add roses to the list! My willow acacia was three ft tall when I planted it in November 2007; it grew to seven ft tall in one year's time !! Is that standard operating procedure ? I include the comments about my successes to qualify this post for "general forum" ...LOL Also, I lost my "garden buddy" Mickey earlier this year, he would have been 13 this month...I miss him so much ! He never messed with anything in the yard; his only offense was taking food off the kitchen counter ! But he always shared a loaf of bread or a plate of chicken thighs with his "roommate" Daisy, though...Interesting pair: he wouldn't drink out of her water dish and she wouldn't drink out of his favorite toilet ! Looking forward to hearing from anyone who hasn't gotten bored and has been able to read this far !

Hi all! Hi Mike! I bought a tree form of the Asian wisteria about 4 years ago. It is in a large pot, I root prune it every other year. It is extremely fragrant, smells nice. No cat pee. I cut a few pieces off a couple of years ago and rooted them in water in the winter. They bloomed in spring. In water. I took them to PA for my best friend to plant she wanted a beast to climb about 50 ft of fence. LOL! She loves it. I can't plant my tree in the ground. I couldn't stop it from spreading, it is unreal. I still have it though, and it is doing just fine in a pot. I also bought a Blue Moon wisteria about 5 years ago from a well known online vine nursery, It is still alive, hasn't bloomed, and doesnt grow very much. If it smells like cat pee I'm throwing it in the trash. But, the Asian doesn't, in case anyone wants to know. You can keep it in a pot, just root prune it at least every other year. And remove the pot off the ground about once a month in the growing season so it doesn't root in the ground and spread that way, Or perhaps just place it on cement pavers or a patio. They are beautiful, aren't they?

I bought a blue moon wisteria for my mom aboaut 3 years ago. She also had trouble with bunnies or deer eating the new growth, especially the first year. I bought her some spray that was made from pig or cow blood. It worked, but we researched to try to find something less gross. Our discovery--soap shavings. She buys cheap bath soap bars at the dollar store and walks around her flower beds and shaves bits of it around her plants using a paring knife. It seems to work. I guess the scent keeps them away. You have to relace over the growing season. Especially after a few heavy rains. I've heard of people using dish soap and water as well. I wonder if human hair clippings might work also. Good Luck! Her wisteria is very beautiful now.

Based upon the enthusiasm, this plant got on my want list, as a sane alternative to the oriental wisterias. In a big pot until it is tall enough to get to the light coming through a deck fence around a deck 4-5feet off the ground. A Holly tree shades right up to the deck and there would be too much shade to just plant the Wisteria and expect it to reach up to the fence. Will not mind if it runs up into Holly. Surely fits many a recommendation for vines, in having roots in the shade and top in the Sun.
