I've just read all 3 of your camera posts - thanks for sharing your interesting study. I'm not surprised your Olympus does better for you, as I have a humble 1.3 megapixel Olympus that usually gets the colors just right - except red in the sunlight (but I suspect that's user ignorance rather than camera quality). Here's hoping you can get Nikon to replace the one you have!

Brooke, I have never had my monitor calibrated. It might be "off" some, but not enough to make the Nikon pictures acceptable. If so, pictures posted by others would look wierd (weird?).

Marea, I have a 1.3 MP Olympus D-400. My problem with it is in getting accurate pinks. I have said before that I don't think I have ever gotten one decent picture with it on automatic, but I don't mind that as I can set it manually. Poor pink color does bother me.

Most monitors are set just as TV screens are, my mac here at work is bright!! colors are very saturated and sometimes all out loud, on the other hand my viewsonic monitor (flatscreen version) at home is much more true to color. All monitors and brands are set differently.

You should also take into account the lighting, incandesent bulbs have a yellow light, unless they are soft-white(still some yellow). Flouresents have a wide range of colors, reg-daylight-blues and so-on. This can actually change the colors your seeing.

Try this experiment
take a piece of black, white, and other color construction paper. Cut the same size-shape hole in the black-white sheets. Place a block of the color under each hole, then look at both sections of color. Although from the same sheet, they appear different in color. Change the lighting? Place a piece of red paper next to a yellowish night light ETC with the room in darkness. The paper appears orange not red? The light is intensifying the yellows in the paper that arent visible to the eye. (i know this because i had to take a barrage of COLOR DESIGN courses in college FUN AS ALL GET OUT!!!)

This happens everywhere!

OK, got the husband away from the basketball tournament and had him look at the two posts about camera comparisons. Bear with me, I took this in shorthand and it means squat to me but have fun.

Look at the owners manuel and get the closest Kelvin settings possible for the white balance on both cameras.

A Nikon's best setting in sun is going to be flash which is the 5400 Kelvin.

When taking comparison pictures, make sure the Kelvin setting on both cameras are the same. The Kelvin settings are obviously different on the two cameras.

Most Nikon owners also get the dark pictures and they cure it by over exposing by 1/3 of a stop and like them better.

If the Nikon has different color modes, you want to make sure you have (and this is not a typo) sRBG and not Adobe RGB. (Now you see why my eyes glaze over when he instructs me).

Anyone trying to take and view pictures needs to have their monitor adjusted by the calibration program. They may be close but not accurate. Even my husbands brand new LCD laptop had to be adjusted. It was amazing when we put the screens side by side with the different variations in color. He ran the program on his and it then matched my computer or as much as you can on an LCD. Royce, your pictures on my screen might be more correct to your eye than on your screen.

Have fun studying your owners manuels tonight. It will keep you off the street and out of trouble.

Brooke, you can tell your husband that unless I overlooked it, Auburn did not make the tournament and they won't show up no matter how long and hard he looks. So, he can now do something worthwhile (like pull weeds). lol

I know all about Kelvin. He's that lowlife that lives down the street. If he's involved in the pictures, it's no wonder they turned out so poorly.

Unless I am overlooking it, the camera does not have different color modes.

I understand that correcting the dark color is no problem and I know how to do that.

One other factor about monitor color. I have printed pictures and they were reasonably close to the monitor color. Of course, that just throws in another variable. The monitor and printer both might be displaying color incorrectly. I still think it is the camera. It will be interesting to see what I get with the Canon. BTW, this does not mean I disagree with your monitor calibrating comments. I don't doubt there should be some corrections. I just think the camera is the major problem.

Yeah, Auburn didn't even make the NIT! Around here it is too cold to pull weeds - they have even mentioned the S word for the early part of next week. Right now my time is spent dragging Japanese maple trees in and out of the building to keep them from having the leaves frost bitten.

I stayed home last night, but feel like I have been running the streets with Kelvin. Pollen is now bad here and allergies are acting up a little. Just looked at my truck and the windshield is covered with pollen. It's in little heaps on the porch.

Funny comment about the sweat on hd tv. Being pore and not having tv, I had not thought of that. I agree that smell-o-vision is one "enhancement" I would rather not have.

SPACECOAST FANCY DANCER is blooming today. Considered taking comparison pictures, since you probably know how it really looks. Decided to wait until I get the Canon, which is due for delivery Tuesday. You might want to skip my Wednesday posts (if I am home) as I will likely be posting lots of pictures.

I also have another 9 month old seedling blooming from a seedling crossed with AWESOME BLOSSOM. I will keep it another year, but first impression is that it will be excellent compost material. I have used AB a lot and it has usually disappointed. I have gotten very little worthwhile from it.

I wish I had a pic of my S. FANCY DANCER but it is one I never got around to taking nor did the good photographer. I sure hope he takes pictures this summer because he works to get it right and I just snap away and pray. I can't wait for the comparison pics - you can now have three hanging around your neck.

You know what they say about boys and their toys - the newest and greatest for some boys. He got it for me for Christmas (like I even knew what a high def TV was) and I was shocked when he actually put the darn thing in the family room where I watch TV instead of the living room where he watches it. Being a nice person, I've offered a couple of times to switch TV's with him.

I have not yet taken a picture of SFD. I was very disappointed with the first bloom. It was sorta twisty and misshapen. However, it has a very nice bloom today.

I probably won't take many, if any, pictures until I get the new camera. Then, I want to do some serious photography and if I get the pictures I hope and think I will, I intend to send the Nikon back AGAIN. I was just thinking, it would be funny (not), if the pictures from the Canon look like the Nikon pictures.

Definitely not funny for you or the wallet if they take the same picture.

SFD should settle down and be very pretty. It's a pretty good rebloomer too, even for me up here.
