Sounds good to me. Did you plant them, or pot them? They need to be potted up, or laid on a moist medium, and slightly covered. Check out some of the other postings. What I am not sure about is your mentioning that they are in "piles". Are they sitting in piles in the air? If so, they will surely dry out.

Saran Wrap rules! I will make a change next year however and not unwrap so early as I am in the same boat as Flowergirl, fighting off the evil drying out. Some tubers seem to hold up better than others.
Today, I resorted to soaking some mummified ones in water for about half an hour and keeping them in a covered container. They have eyes, so if all else fails I will plant them and hope for the best. Actually I did that with two in pots.
"Hard as rocks" is better than spongy as SpongeBob SquarePants. Flowergirl,if they tend to look shrivelly or dry, try misting them well with a spray bottle and covering with newspaper or plastic bag for a day or two if they start to look dry. Or as Jroot says, plant them on a moist medium. Until you can get them in your garden or big pot.

The good ones are in the ground. That is the ones that showed eyes. The others, I was waiting to see if they had eyes before I planted them, so I guess my mistake was not in laying them on soil and keeping them covered. Thanks for the input, I may learn how to do this yet! Happy Gardening

I recieved some tubers that were drying out and i used my brothers unused gallon sized fertilizer sprayer to spray some water on them. i layed them in my field while i was planting and come and flipped and sprayed them with water every once in a while and they all perked up! you could probably use a spray bottle and do the same thing.

... Interesting that you used that sprayer. So did I. It gives a little moisture when needed. We're learning together.

For the past 7 years I've stored a little over 1000 tubers in saranwrap in the fall and didn't unwrap them until a few days before planting in mid May. As long as your tubers are stored between 40 and 50 degrees, there is no reason to examine them over the winter or unwrap them prematurely.

Great shot, Bernie. My problem is keeping the temperature low. Already my "cold cellar" is 58*, and yet it is about 40* outside today. Unfortunately, the sun hits one wall of my "cold cellar".

I also leave mine wrapped until ready to pot up. The area mine are in now is 60 degrees and the tubers I still have wrapped up are just fine. Some may have a 2 or so inch sprout already and some are just starting to eye up. If you unwrap them and leave them unwrapped they will dry out.
