i also live in ny (nyc)and recently purchased a washington orange and a clemantine plant.

i also purchased a lighting system that i will use when i bring the plants indoors for the winter. see link below

do u think i will be able to get my plants to fruit?

do u know whether the trees have chill requirements?

do u have any tips u can pass on re growing citrus in ny

do your trees fruit?

do u have a greenhouse?

I'm not from ny, but hi..

love your choice of lighting- I have the same setup..

what watt did you get? I have had the 800 watt for 2 1/2 yrs and am very happy with it. It works miracles for the trees- and me.. if you sit under the lights for 15-30 minutes it takes the winter blues away :)

Here is the email thread for my first contact. I sent them a photo because they were closed on the weekend when I discovered the problem. Funny, it took a couple calls to get to the right guys, but this is how government employees treat things. It took them 10 days to get back to me by email, but the inspector had already come out from my phone call and photos to the correct people. I did what I could, but if you use their email, they don't actually get to it for days... This is a serious thing, but evidently not to them. The bugs sound like mealy bugs. If you spray rubbing alcohol all over the plant including uder the leaves and in the forks of the branches then do it again 3 days later, you'll have a lot fewer. They thrive when the plant is unhealthy because of drought or poor light. Don't get a lot of alcohol in the soil and do it when the plants are well watered. The halogen lights produce a lot of heat and were unsuccessful here, but possibly because I wasn't home to provide the extra water necessitated by the heat. Understand that you'll get lots of tiny fruits and a lot will drop off. The mealy bugs love the base of the fruit and flowers so spray that area well. Pollinating the flowers will cause an increase in seeds without an increase in fruit set in some citrus varieties. It looks like the plant is pretty happy now and like most wont be able to support all those fruit to ripeness. That's why a lot fall off. Since you have more flowers than you'll get ripe fruit, there's no reason to try to increase fruit set by polination.

I have pictures of Makaha Sunn in my little battery camera, Richard has seen them. I will bring my camera to our meeting so you can see them. It is really hot colors, kinda like Gold Coast Cotton Candy, but more orange. It just had buds when I went down week before last. I took pictures, but it doesn't do her justice, they are so tiny. I did not take pictures last weekend, I was too upset, and wanted to get home. Emerson sent me a picture of Broomstick, and the colors are alot like Glady's O'Neal, but it has hugh open blooms. I am not partial to yellows, but it sure did look pretty. He said he will promote it next year. I felt I better get it now, its going to be impossible to get next year. Barbra

vesfl, I'm so glad it is of interest. I find these things very absorbing, even when they reference growing conditions different from mine, and plants I probably couldn't grow here even if they were all still available in commerce. I do realize that Long Island NY is not in the western part of the state, but I also think you might also enjoy reading a very good article written in 1907 by Admiral Aaron Ward (whose garden, Willowmere, was in Roslyn, NY): https://books.google.com/books?id=axkiAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA43#v=onepage&q&f=false vaporvac, I don't think the 'General' is still in commerce; HMF says that Rogue Valley Roses carries it, but it isn't featured at their web site. I would call RVR to ask. I also wonder if the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden still has this rose, and if they could be lobbied to propagate it for one of their sales? It might not help you get one anytime soon, but in the long run, who knows? Virginia

hi, I don't live in NY but I live in zone 5 in Ontario. I have a calamondin orange tree and have had it for 7 years. It fruits every second year because the fruit stays on the tree for 2 years at a time ( I don't pick them when they ripen because I don't eat them - for me, they are ornaments ). I don't use a light system on it. it goes outside for the summer to end of october(thereabouts) and comes in for the winter. I place it at a northeast window usually. I kept it in the house the whole year at that window one year and it still flowered and fruited. if your orange trees grow the same way as this, I would say that you will be able to get fruit especially since you will be using a lighting system.

Yes I have!

But- I have mostly the sour fruits, not the sweets.. I have Key lime, persion lime, calamondins, and a limequat that fruits profusely.

I also have 2 Sanbokan lemons that have fruited (though they are small) but they did taste like lemonade.

The one tree I am being daring with is my one Meiwa Kumquat tree.. I know it needs a lot of heat to produce sweet fruit. This will be the first season it is bearing fruit- it is in bloom right now- so I will let you know.

Just remember, even though this is a wonderful light setup- it is artificial- so I run mine anywhere from 12- 15 hours a day. My trees are in an east facing kitchen so they receive hardly any natural sunlite at all, and I run my lights at night. I turn them on at sundown and turn them off when I leave for work in the morning. Been using this schedule for 2 1/2 yrs and am thrilled with the results. I know it sounds a little backwards, but the kitchen is dark while I'm at work because of no sunlight- so it all works out.

Plus, I feel safer having the lights on while I'm at home rather than running them while I'm gone.
