How to put up an Christmas tree

So, this is how I put up my Xmas tree.

Step 1: clean the living room. Vacuum up enough cat fur to make another cat. Move the furniture around to make room for the tree.

Step 3: Buy a tree

Step 3: Realize that your hate the half dismantled back wall, and will not take pics of this years tree with that as a background.

Step 4: Begin ripping down the crap on the back wall in earnest. Read: faux brick panelling; toasted pine 1x4Âs in a sort of pattern.

Step 5: Curse, and pour an adult beverage.

Step 6: repeat Step 4.

Step 7: repeat Step 5.

Step 8: begin putting up the first of 6 panels of 8Â x 4Â gyprock.

Step 9 : piece the inside bits of the walls, doors, etc.

Step 10: repeat Step 5.

Step 11: Apply corners, inside and outside.

Step 12: Curse, but no adult beverage, cause this is too tricky.

Step 13: Repeat Step 5.

Step 14: Begin to apply Mud, otherwise know as joint compound.

Step 15: put another coat of compound on, feather out.

Step 16: sand all joints down. Add another week, oh crap, I mean coat of mud.

Step 17: Sand everything smooth, whether itÂs dry or not!!!

Step 18: Apply primer, which is 50% of the final colour.

Step 19: Realize you should have done 14 through 17 way more.

Step 20: Apply 1st coat of colour

Step 21: Apply 2nd coat of colour

Step 22: Apply 3rd coat of colour, and wish youÂd done more steps 24 through 17.

Step 23: Repeat Step 1.

Step 24: Put the tree up, and decorate!!!!!

Time for another adult beverage!!!

Oh yeah - btw, crown moulding yet to be applied. And I need to continue around the room.

It's lovely! I love those days when it hits you that you just can't take the look of something one more day and finally you begin. I can't wait to see it in all it's glory when you've finished the rest of the walls. Good job!

Looks great Nancy, I won't go into the rant I did last year about trying to purchase our Christmas tree saga. Artificial now because the house is too warm for the real thing with the wood burning insert installed in the fireplace. I must remember it wasn't the adult beverage I consumed before and while assembling said tree that made the room go round, it turned out I bought a revolving tree and the switch was in the turned on position, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Hope everyones preparations are going well for Christmas, the Holiday Season or anything else that is celebrated at this time. This weekend I'll get myself in gear and get at it.
My DH absolutely hates it when I have one of those "I can't stand this one more minute moments" this is why the crowbar is well hidden LOL.

I don't see how it would be considered insane? Many people put up their Christmas tree and decorations Thanksgiving weekend. (So starting black Friday is VERY common). You are doing it the week before. That is such a short span of time--I fail to see why anyone would call this "insane". Yes, I realize we are all suppose to buy the party line that decorating for Xmas prior to turkey day is blasphemous, but it is really okay not to fall in step with that. I had an aunt (no longer with us) who loved her artificial Xmas trees so much that she kept all 3 up year around. I thought she was a little different, but certainly not insane!

I bought my purple stuff at Hobby Lobby last year. Today Cheryl brought me a new quail ornament for my tree. I haven't hung it on there yet. I have to decorate my mantle downstairs. I have a little leaning pine tree and I also put my Breyer Christmas pony and sleigh there and other horse drawn things on it. I will have a Christmas mantle scarf too, it is lacy. Maybe I can talk Cheryl into doing it for me? She will be over after church tomorrow. I looked at my Christmas tree box and it says it has 400 lights on it. The tree was a Christmas gift one year from Cheryl and Kevin. Kevin was happy to get the raspberry pie. I have 4 pies to take to church tomorrow. I did not get any Christmas cards today. I am tired, think I will go to bed pretty soon. Have a good evening all. Sue

One of my sisters used to live in Placerville, CA. (Est. circa 1848.) Every year at Christmastime they put Christmas trees on the guard rail along the highway running through town. All have lights, many also have some decorations. It's so awesome to drive through town (which you have to do if you're driving Hwy 50 to South Lake Tahoe) at night and see the trees. Neat looking during the day, too. And, yes, Thomas Kinkade grew up in Placerville, Most of his Christmas -themed paintings are of Placerville.

Kathleen44, every year I buy my daughter a special gift on Christmas. Four years ago I got a call from the hospital telling me she was a patient and needed a procedure done. She was not capable to give permission. She was very very sick and was only given a 50-50 chance to live. She was there because she was a heroin addict and was very close to death. She had left our family and we didn't know where she was for over a year. She spent almost two months in the hospital went into rehab and today is a happy healthy young woman. My gifts to her each year are to celebrate her "new life" and I consider Christmas a rebirthday. This year I am giving her a small wooden sign that says "don't stumble over what is behind you". My point in telling this story is to help you understand that you can begin a new life and live it YOUR way. If you don't want to celebrate Christmas this year maybe you can help someone less fortunate by helping at a soup kitchen or visiting a lonely person in a nursing home. Nothing makes us more human than reaching out to others. Don't stumble over what is behind you.

Wow, Nancy! You can do drywall! (gyprock, sheetrock, ...)

I think I would have dealt with the ugly wall issue by just not taking any pictures of the Christmas tree this year, but then I'm a procrastinator from way back.

Wow, and it all began with a Christmas tree! What a great job you did.............been there and done that and you deserved all the adult beverages you could hold (and still do the work).

Every year when I get in a snit about Christmas and getting everything done....I realize that I have known it was coming all year and yet wait until the last minute. I am a slow learner. But there is always next year.....you all remind me about Thanksgiving, please.

You did a super job on the sheetrock, much better than what I did. My weakness was corners and edges.

Hee-hee!! Annette - Maybe I need a DH to hide the crowbar. My friends dispair - omg, she's ripped her house apart again!! lol. TM, I did think about not taking pics, for a sec! My sanding needs more work, and I should have bought one of those corner smoothing thingies.

If only I had your ambition and talent. My kitchen and pantry are still unfinished after five years! At least the pantry's drywall is finished off. The kitchen has the old wallpaper stripped but that is all. I'm set on putting bead board on walls and ceilings, so until I can afford that and find a proper carpenter to at least help me the rooms will remain as is.

ROFL - and remembering why I haven't had a full sized tree for years .... I don't know how to drywall! (I knew there was a reason!)

That's a great quote - I'm going to remember it and use it often. Seriously, sometimes that's the only way a person gets something done - do it yourself. In fact, you've inspired me, I may go looking for bead board after Christmas.

One time, before the library room was nothing more than still a garage, I painted the one wall that had old unfinished drywall on the lower half a dark gold color and stenciled big silver fleur-de lis on it. It was beautiful! I'd always put my tree up in there, too; and one Christmas it was so cold in that room (no furnace ducts in there at the time)that a bottle of fancy vinegar I had bought as a gift, froze.
